Astra Emission Control Warning Light

I have an 2002 Astra wagon 1600 16v with mileage of around 21T kms. When I started the car just this morning, the emissions warning light on the dashboard started to blink then continously remained lighted and the engine's idling became erratic. Just wondering what could be the problem and if anyone has experienced this same problem with their astra?
