Starter motor problem?

2000 Jeep wrangler was running fine, went to start, heard a slight poping noise, starter would not turn over. I noted that when I turned the key forward, the guages indicated power from the battery, gas in the tank, temp normal, etc. When I attempted to start, I would hear a click (relay switch), the starter did not turn over, and I would lose power.
So, Plenty of juice from the battery, no issues with fuses, relay switch clicks when the key is turned, and I was able to start the Jeep by popping the cluth after a push, runs without difficulty but won't start when turned off. Also, I noticed that the clock on teh radio reset itself, which I found odd. Sound like the starter to you?
Next Q, I'm considering changing the starter myself, as I have the time. I changed a few starter motors back in my youth, and figure that it shouldn't be too much of an issue now. Anything I should be concerned about with the 2000 jeep?
Thanks for any help!

I'd test voltage on your battery first with a loadmeter -- especially if it's the original one. The problem you described could be the battery.
I wouldn't rule out some relay somewhere either.

Replacing the starter motor, is an easy job. Just remember to hit a store to pick up a 6-pack of labatt Blue
