i was thinking about getting either an SLP catback or a flowmaster american thunder cat back. which will give me more performance, and which will be louder. i got a 350 with hedman shorties. and my car is a 86

If by "best" you meaa "plainest, most overrated, and the same tone as everyone else"

Between those two I would pick the loudmouth. Much better flow (straight thru) and tone, plus its LOUD.

I get props all the time for my exhaust - people are always telling me how awesome it sounds and ask me what system it is... its a Flowmaster 80 series muffler, thats it. I've got crappy Edelbrock shorties and the rest is stock. The dual 2.5" outlet pipes actually constrict back down to 2.25" to accomodate the stock rectangular tips - looks completely stock, sounds like 500 hp.

I've heard the SLP loudmouth (on an LT1 its pretty cool but on the LS1 its shit); the MagnaFlow catback system sounds suprisingly good considering how cheap it is. I've come to the realisation that the Borla catback is one of the best performing systems on the market look at ALL the top F-Bodies featured in GM High Tech (street legal) anyways - they're ALL running Borla's. I know I'm due for a real 3" catback with long tubes and as tempted as I am to get a Borla I just can't stand how awfully raspy it sounds. I honestly think I'm going to spring for an American Thunder catback if I can get one with the 80 series muffler. Flowmaster sounds awesome.

I am a big fan of the loudmouth systems. I have put them on MANY LS1 cars and I think it is the best sounding system by far.

What about GMMG?

What one would give you more power and still sound good? I was wanting Flowmasters american thunder with edelbrock headers. would that be good on a 305 tpi?

Hey Hypsi, are there Loudmouth's that don't come with a muffler (or do they all come with that little cherrybomb sytle one). This dude I met at a car meet was running a loudmouth with no muffler - said it came like that (it was a '00 Z28). Maybe he didn't notice the little muffler part, who knows... I agree that the Loudmouth gives off one of the better sounds on LS1 motors - especially at really high RPM's, but there's something about how those new engines sound, and idle... not as mean and muscular as the old school sound - to me anyways.

IrocZman, I don't know what style headers Edelbrock makes for your model but don't even consider the TES (Tubular Exhaust System) smog-legal shorties - they are garbage. Go with long tubes.

GMMG exhuast, anyone? Btw, DVS LT1, i heard from a couple of guys here that for the 305, the edelbrock TES was the way to go.

First off sound is personal preference unlike performance. And we both agreed on the Magnaflow...

But you see the thing is, this thread said NOTHING ABOUT TONE QUALITY until you came in all ignorant and said "flowmaster sounds the best hands down." THAT WAS NOT PART OF HIS QUESTION!!! And if for one second you think that flowmaster is louder than the SLP take you head out of your ass, q-tip the crap out of your ears and listen again you god damn momo... now shut up

Listen to this man!!!! He knows what he is talking about. GMMG is a SWEET sounding catback for the LS1 cars.

It is all in personal opinion. I liked my Loudmouth when my car most mostly stock. It didn't sound too bad with longtubes. Sounded like shit to me once I got the cam put in. So bad, that I took it off. Replacing it with Magnaflow. And here (http://www.ls1sounds.com/magnaflow/magnaflow_QTP-LT-ORY_WOT30-80flyby.MPG) is why.
Personally, I would never put the DroneMasters on my cars. They don't seem to flow as well, and for some reason they drone really bad.

Go to www.ls1sounds.com to hear the popular systems. Keep in mind, everyone's cars tend to sound a little different.

V6 guys probably know more then us about the sound of V8 exhaust, seeing as how they get to hear it from behind so much. lol J/K 97

93-97 camaro Z28's have the LT1 motor with 275-285 hp and the 98-02 Z28's LS1 motor have 305-310 hp... the difference to me is GM just got smarter as those years progressed :)

Whoa whoa whoa. I might own a 1992 Firebird V6, but I also own a 1974 Firebird 350 V8, and a 1973 Nova 307 V8. And in the family there is also a 1993 Corvette LT-1, a 1969 Camaro SS 396/375, and a door slammer drag car with a 600 ci / 800 hp engine.

I think you should think about what your going to say before steriotyping us V6 owners.

thats not entirely accurate
ls1 corvette 97-00 345/350 01-03 350/375
base f-body 98-00 305/335 01/02 310/340
ram air f-body 98-00 320/345 01/02 325/350
LT1 = iron block
LS1 = Aluminum block

While those numbers are accurate....they are just the GM ratings. And of course, nothing can be rated as high as the Corvette.

Most M6 LS1 cars will put down 305-315 RWHP. Stock. This includes Corvette's, Firebirds, and Camaros.

Got this quote from a reputable magazine....I know, using magazine quotes....Anyways.....
Note: Factory LS1 powered F-Bodies have approximately the same Horsepower and Torque rating as the C5 Corvette of their perspective model years. GM actually underrates the specifications of the F-Body for C5 marketing purposes. Both the LS1 F-Body, and the C5 Corvette both show and average of 305rwhp on the dyno.
