92 Corolla Acceleration Problem

I'm usually over at the isuzu board, but my dad's corolla has developed a problem. At around 40 mph, when you accelerate, the engine sounds 'louder' like its working really hard or like an engine fan is dragging it down. If you take your foot off the accelerator at that point, you can hear the engine gradually wind down but louder than normal. I can't tell if there is any loss in power since this is not my usual driving vehicle though I think there is a loss in power at higher speeds.

Spark plugs were changed just 2 months ago and all the fluids appear fine. I'm thinking that this could be:

1. exhaust manifold leak?
2. exhaust leak?
3. transmission slip at higher gears??
4. what else am I missing here......???

Any suggestions on narrowing this down, or has anyone encountered a similar problem.

Thanks.

Could it just be the tranny shifting into overdrive? That's about where mine shifts, if I'm not pushing it hard. Just a thought.

It turned out to be bad wheel bearings.....took several mechanics to figure it out.
