Im trying to give my car a less flashly look and I figured I would start out by smoking the tail lights black, I am unsure about how to do this right though I know I will need to prep the tail lights prime them then paint them and add clear coat, but is it that simple or is there more to it?!?!

I've been looking to do this too. What Im eventually going to do is to take transparent black paint (Testors) and apply a light coat to the lights. Then, when I get an even coat and the right darkenss, then add a finish coat. Not sure what to use for that tho. Ive been too lazy to look into what i need and no time to do it. Look for transparent paint tho, that will work. Also, try it out on something else first. Dont ruin yor lights, then blame it on me. lol. i am not held responsible. lloll. good luck

I have had Testors candy apple red on my altezzas for 1 year now. I added 4 sprays, and that was it. No clear coat at all. Lights look as if painted yesterday, absolutely no fading. I sold two seperate pairs on e-bay also, no complaints.
My friend used the Testors transparent black to smoke his 240SX tail lights. Worked like a charm, no clear coat required! I've had enough experience with Testors to say that their paint is awesome...plus $4 a can shipped? Can't beat that!

Abosultely nothing else required. Take off the lights, clean the surface thoroughly with windex (or equivalent). Place lights on a chest-height stand or something, since the cans can only spray when held upright. Do about 4 coats, allow 5-8 minute drying between coats, and leave for 24 hours to fully dry. And your all set!

I just used spray paint from autozone and clearcoat. I have some friends that did theirs in VHT, only problem is that your lights be dark as shit, I can hardly see their brake lights during the day. I managed to spray mine in a light and even enough coat that you can see them just fine but still get the smoked look.
