No metal pins in my Data Link Port for remote programming

I purchased a 1997 Suburban and both of the remotes do not work. Found a new one on eBay with programming instructions. Went to do it and you have to contact a jumper wire to #4 & #8 terminals in the Data Link Port before programming. Sounded easy but when I got there there was no metal pins in those terminal numbers.

Any ideas of what to do now? I contacted the seller but haven't heard anything back yet.

Different keyless entry systems are used on General Motors vehicles. The parts are not interchangeable even though the parts may appear to be similar. Observe the back of the transmitter in order to properly identify the system. On 1999 S/T pickups and utilities, use a transmitter identified with GM/UTA preceding the part number.


With the driver door closed, hold down the power unlock button on the door panel.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Release the power unlock button on the door panel. The remote control door lock receiver will respond in the following manner in order to indicate that the receiver is in the programming mode:
Locking the doors
Unlocking the doors

Important
All extra transmitters must be programmed at this time. When a new transmitter is programmed, it will deactivate the old transmitters.


Hold down the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter until the remote control door lock receiver will respond in the following manner:
Locking the doors.
Unlocking the doors.
Repeat step 7 for each additional transmitter.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position in order to exit the transmitter programming mode.

I tried that also but when I let go of the power lock, the locking and unlocking of the doors doesn't happened so it must not be going into the programming code.

Anything else I can do?

Have you tried putting new batteries in your old remotes.

Yes, they are brand new in the existing remotes and one of the remotes is brand new also. The person I bought the new remote from says I have to get it programmed through the Data Link Port with a scanner because the metal pins there are missing, and since it won't programm the way you told me to do it. He told me to do it the way you did because the first way wouldn't work, (because the pins were missing), and then he later said this would be the only way to do it, (with a scanner).

I really don't want to have to pay someone to do it.

Just wanted to let you know that I took a chance and put two wires in the Data Link Port in terminals 4 & 8 and the programming mode started, then I was able to program the remote. Only the new one worked as I thought because the others were no good. But one is better than none.
