i read in one online repair guide the steering knuckle had to be replaced along with ball joints. i couldn't find any information anywhere else about this. any comments on this? just how bad is it to do this job? i figured as long i was in there i might as well replace the front struts as well. 1998 taurus se 24v 142,000 miles. if anybody is wondering yes i had the tranny rebuilt about 22,000 miles ago.

Ford says to replace the sreering knuckle. I have heard that some have cut them out with a torch and installed new ones. I haven't tried that yet.

something like that you might want to have taken to a pro. A slight mistake can screw up your car for good.

I replaced both ball joints on my 1999 Taurus Wagon. I just took the whole knuckle out and took it to a local shop where they pressed out the old one and then pressed in the new. It cost about $20 for them to do it.
