Transmission problem or not?

I have 1996 4 cyl. 2.4 cavalier with automatic tranny. My problem is that RPM's are too high when I drive. It looks like tranny is slipping. I changed the transmission fluid and add some slip preventing fluid from Auto Zone but it didn't help. The situation is when you hit the gas RPM's goes up but car goes slow and it doesn't feel like tranny is slipping. That happens on all gears. And RPM's are like twice higher than should be. Does someone know what to do? And could someone tell me how to check tranny fluid level because my tranny doesn't have dipstick.

I would appreciate any help.

on the back of the tranny there is a plug pull it out and if fluid comes out fast there is too much, if nothing comes out there isnt enough, what u need is a slow drip comiing out and that will mean u have enough, if u lay under the car it is on the back towards the rear of the car. and it sounds like u may have a tranny problem other than just fluid. i would bring to a tranny shop

I checked tranny fluid level as was told and it was dripping really slow so I assumed that level is fine. So about slipping problem Is there any possibility to do something by myself?

I was thinking to bring it to service to do computer diagnosis. I just thought that there is some solution for that because fixing tranny in repair shop is very expensive.

Thanks a lot.

I did copmuter diagnosis and it shows that I have to codes:

Set DTCs (codes)

History DTC P0141
02 Sensor Heater
Circuit Malfunction
(Bank 1 Sensor 2)
MIL NOT REQUESED
Since IGN NOT RUN
Since Clear P/F

History DTC P1133
H02S (sensor)
Sensor 1
Insuff. Switching
MIL REQUESTED
Since IGN NOT RUN
Since Clear P/F

That all what I got. Could that be cause of my problem?

I am not to sure about trannys but those two codes are from an o2 sensor and if you dont have a light they they cleared them selfs as for the tranny i am not sure about that. i never really mess with mine i have done everything else but i would bring to a tranny shop to look at. or see if you can find a shop that does trannys and see if they can tell you what it is and get a price. then if you know what is wrong u might be able to do somthing yourself. Sorry there isnt anything else i can help you with and if the level was dripping slow that is good. so good luck with it and your right it wont be cheap at a shop might be cheaper to buy a tranny from a junk yard or somthing or new. and replace urself.

i dont really think it's your tranny slipping. Mine is, and its very noticable. When you step on the gas, the car shakes alot. Cavaliers from around 89ish-96 are known to have problems with their transmission. I'd suggest just getting it rebuilt. I'm not an expert or anything, but its a costly thought.

Could you describe how it happens with your car, because I have that feeling too that it is not slipping. But It doesn't shake at all. Everything is fine until you gently push the gas. As soon as you harder (harshly) push the gas RPM's goes up but car is going same speed as it was. And another thing is at 4000 RPM's engine is gasping like not enough fuel or something.

I have check engine light from time to time but nothing else. Could you explain what for is O2 sensor? And do you know what for is plug on the bottom of engine. I was checking fluid in tranny and notice that some wire was coming from side and it was unhooked from that plug so I connected it back but I have no idea what it was.

well the O2 sensor. does just that sensors the o2 in the exhaust and sends a signal to your computer to make the air fuel ratio work... and the plug if it was connected to the tranny is two wires... that is your Vss sensor and if that was unplugged that would be the problem with your tranny,.

Ok I went to tranny service today. They check it with their own test device and took my car to ride and they told me that my tranny is fine and there is nothing wrong with it. Only my O2 sensor. They think that something wrong with my fuel system. Might be my fuel pump (not enough presure) or some fuel sensor or something I just didn't get it. I remember he told me that this fuel stuff cost $60 and fuel pump to $400. Do you have any idea what that could be. Could that O2 sensor be my problem? Is it really important to have it right?

By the way that thing with 4000 RPM's is fine. It is some kind of restriction so it should be that way.

Replace the 02 sensor and, if it still fails, check to make sure you don't have a plugged cat.

Yes, I'm going to change that O2 sensor and also I'm going to change my fuel filter and air filter and try some fuel injector cleaner. Could you explain me what is plugged cat?

Well, its just like it sounds, the cat isn't flowing like it should. Could be lots of reasons. If all else fails, disconnect the exhaust in front of the cat and then see if you can still drive it w/o the problem. If you can drive it after you disconnect the cat, then go buy yourself a new catalytic converter. You can get a generic one at someplace like Advance Auto Parts for aroung $45 or so.

Then again, if memory serves, most people don't even know that things like catalytic converters carry a 10 year warranty, and..well...you got a 96.

I've heard of brakes that lag a car. Also yeah, dump an entire can of seafoam in your tank. That'll clean just about everything.

My car suddenly died. At morning I was going to get replacement parts and it won't start. I don't know what to do. Fuel pump is working but I couldn't find spark plugs to check spark. Do you have any idea what it could be?
