1998 Jetta GL
My starter switch is getting old. Although the engine starts fine and all that, the acc sensor, or whatever, is loose. My fans, wipers, lights, and god knows what else won't work anymore unless I manually hold my key in a "certain" way. I know I have to replace the switch.
Is this a something I could do myself, or would it be too much of a pain? Should I just cop up the money and pay a mechanic to replace it?

Definitely sounds like the electrical part of the ignition switch. It is a bit involved to replace... not much in the line of special tools except a steering wheel puller. Get a good manual if you want to try it.

Yeah, I have the haynes manual. It looked like a painful process. Plus I don't have a puller. I'm prob'ly going to have to just take it to a mechanic, or a VW dealer. That'll cost a pretty penny. Any clues on where I'd be able to buy a new switch w/o being ripped off?

Try 1-800-VW-PARTS, they'll have it for sure
