Tighten Belts

My belts are squeaking, and I know it could be loose belts. I know where the tensinoir is, but how exactly do I tighten it?
Theres 1 bolt that goes through the pulley, and it looks like its on a rail of some sort. Theres a little box, with a hole that looks threaded. Do I need to put something in that hole to tighten it? It seems if I loosen the bolt on the pulley, itll go moving away, and seems like it would be a bitch to get back to tighten. Any thoughts? Thanks

Ill try and write this so it makes sence....
On the side of the altenator, there is a block with a blot going through the side of it. The bolt is 1/2 inch. Take your wrench and loosed that blot about two turns. Then look at the front of the altenator and you will find a bolt that also threads into the metal block that we previously loosened. Take a 12mm wrench and tighten this bolt while pressing down on it with your other hand. This will keep it from popping out of the slot its in. After tightening this....check the amount ot play in the belt.....there should be about 5mm of play in the belt.....Then while still holding the long bolt down with one hand, tighten the 1/2 inch bolt with your wrench. Start your car and hopefully there wont be a squeek. I hope this helps. i just got up and im not thinking very well...hope that makes sence, and works, the procedure ir much easier for the power steering pully!

he's got a 2g non-turbo.

the tensioner is on the front of the engine. the one you're seeing is for the surpentine belt which runs ac and power steering. you need to loosen the nut on the bolt that goes through the pulley (runs perpendicular to the belt) then to tighten the belt, turn the bolt on the front (parallel with the belt) clockwise like a normal bolt. it should be the right tension when you can grab the belt between the crank pulley and the ac compressor and turn it about 90 degrees.
the alternator is the same type but the nut is right next to the strut tower and the bolt to tighten/loosen it is pointing towards the firewall. you either have to cut up your arm trying to tighten it or get underneath the car to tighten it.

I took a look at it yesterday, and there only 1 bolt... the bolt that goes through the pulley. The part where it looks like there should be a second one, there is nothing. There is a hole, but no bolt. The head would be facing the FRONT of the car, right? There is nothing there. I tried loosening the bolt, and wedging something against the pulley, and it kinda worked, but it still sqeaks. Any help?

yes there should be a head facing the front of the car that moves the pulley forward and backwards to tighten/loosen the belt. it's the same setup on the alternator but the head is facing the firewall.

Does anyone know what size bolt that should be?
