Alternator questions

I recintly bought a 95 3000GT SL and ive been loving it ever since. Since i got it i installed some subwoofers so it could really pound. well anyways on to the problem, one day while i was warming up my car during the winter (running full heater, de-icers, lights, and subs) i noticed a burning smell so i imdiatly turned off everything and poped the hood. the first thing that i saw was a glowing hot wiring terminal on the Alternator. :banghead: Since then the voltage indicator never goes higher than 12v and even dips down to about 8v after driving for a bit. From what ive seen im pretty sure that the alternator is completly fried. ive quoted some places and found rebuilt alternators for around $160 but my question is where can i find more high performance alternators for my car like alternators that can produce around 160 -200 amps and if i do get these will i have to replace anything else on my car (wires, fuses, etc..) also i would appreciate any tips that you guys have on removing and installing the alternator thank you

Do you have a capacitor? Because if you have a system that's drawing a lot of power from the battery, you might want to consider a capacitor.

no no no compacators are a waste of money. Or atleast the specs and demonstrations i've seen on the sub forum. Basically all it does is holds volts till your sub hits. So if you are listenting to nomral rap/rock music that hits alot it never has time to hold the charge again. I'd check with the guys in the Audio forums here. They are VERY VERY smart bout subs wahts good whats not the proper box and tuning things. I always used a sealed box cause all u did was put your subs in and go. but did you know a tuned ported box to a specfic hertz for your subs can hit ALOT harder?
