Disconnecting a battery

I know this is a very basic question, and something I should know how to do, but how do you disconnect the battery?

There are two post, and you take them off with a screwdriver usually(you will have to pry them open after you loosen the bolt because the corrosion and acid build up always makes it stick). If it's a quick realese contraption it should be even easier, but I would get rid of it if you have that. I had one one my Ambassador and since there is so many curves in the larger then usual post, it melted at the smallest curve and caused the post to literaly explode into two pieces. But anyway, it's prolly not a quick release. I always take off the neg post first(I think thats how it goes, if im wrong correct me someone), and be sure not to let the neg post touch anything while your taking off the positive post, otherwise you will have a circuit again and energy will run through. I've never really thought about taking off a battery, I just do it, so if my description seems wrong, look at someone elses.

Yes, remove the negative cable first as this lessens the chance of shorting the battery when you take off the positive cable.

Be care ful, you can pry them open, but Do NOT pry them off!! This can damage the fragile lead post and the lead plates in the battery and ruin it.
For a few bucks you can get a battery termonal remover, (it looks like a tiny gear puller) It makes the job much easier and quicker.

If the battery has bolt-on side terminals, no puller is required.
