Out of Ideas

Okay, long story. One night, my bird, which has never given me any problems of this type, decided not to start. It started just fine when I left and wouldnt even turn over when I tried to come back home. So I had it towed to a mechanic and he ran a "jumper" wire from the ignition switch and spliced it into the wire that goes to the starter, I guess I have a faulty wire somewhere.
So he calls me back and says its fixed.
I show up and the car will turn over now but it wont start, it wont even fire. So he sprays brake cleaner into this black rounded square tube to the front left of the engine compartment and the car starts up and runs great as long as he is sprayin that stuff. When he stops, it dies.
So I come home and change my fuel filter. While the filer was off, I turned the key and the pump is still working like a charm.
After I get the filter in, I turn the key to allow the line to fill, then try to start it... once again it turns over but it wont start.
However, sometimes it will start up just fine after it sits for some time, but it will never start imediately after it gets turned off.
To add to the confusion, it has only died on me once... maybe 4-5 months ago.
I'm at a complete loss for ideas.
I know there is a pressure reg, could that be the problem?
Could he have bypassed some sort of switch by jimmy-rigging the starter?
What do you guys think? Anyone had a similar problem?
