Golf Auto Trans problems...won't upshift

'97 Golf (man. 9/96) with A/T...Transmission has problem with shifting into the next higher gear. "holds on" to 1st gear, 2nd gear, etc. too long. Often will not go into overdrive.

Had the car to a trans shop (AAMCO) :( and could not find a problem.

Anyone have any suggestions? Possibly bad speed sensor?

Did they even know how to check the fluid level or what type of fluid it takes? You need to find someone familiar with VW who can scan the trans system, it requires a VW or VAG-COM scanner.

Yes, I am very skeptical of this AAMCO trans shop. In addition to them not fixing the problem, the trans fluid is leaking all over the garage floor (service done about 4 months ago).
