Can anyone here shed some light on the correct specifications for the CFM rating of the quadrajet carburetor for this particular model?
73 C-10 350 engine
Edelbrock web site states that the oem replacement is 750 CFM and that is the lowest CFM Q series Carb they offer.
So I bought it.......... The truck loads up very badly and fouls the plugs.
I took it to a shop to further diagnose the issue and was told that "No Way is that the correct CFM Carb " for the truck." The mechanic says "it is dumping way too much fuel and cannot be leaned out any further" Everything else checks out ok except that.
Who is right ? I would have thought Edelbrock would be the authority on Carburetion.
The only other reccomendation the mechanic gave was to convert from points & cond. Distributor to HEI Distributor, but he says that wont solve the fule dumping issue.
Im totally Confused now! I want to verify before i buy another new carb and that not fix the problem.

the problem with carbs is most techs nowadays don't know how to work on them or even how they work. a quadrajet will flow up to 750cfm. if you like taking stuff apart get a rebuild kit and overhaul your old carb, most kits are cheap $30 or so. if they couldn't lean out the carb by messing with the idle screws it is loading up because something is gummed up and sticking. a sunk float or stuck open metering rod will do this but a rebuild kit will have all these parts.

yeah i have a 73 c-10 with a 350 and i have a holley 600 cfm with vaccum secondaries and even that was way too rich. i had to get smaller main jets and a power valve that opens at lower vaccum levels because of the high flow of the carb. someone told me that 600 is a little high for even a 350 possibly. thats with a stock cam in mine tho, if you have a racing cam it will require a bit more jetting than a stock cam would.
as a comparison to your setup, you said you have a 750 cfm edelbrock carb on a 350 engine that i will assume is stock. a friend of mine has a 454 with a really lopey racing cam that he runs a 600 cfm edelbrock carb on. runs great and will BEAT A 2002 v8 MUSTANG DEAD IN ITS TRACKS. that mother goes so fast that the rear end of the truck starts losing traction and swaying a little from the uplift of air on the underside of the box. that truck is badass with only 600 cfm on a 454. so yeah i would definately sell your edelbrock or trade it for one with a smaller maximum cfm.
