Hey fellas,
Is it only me that thinks the Carrera versions of the 911 always have better exhaust notes than the Turbo versions. Can somebody correct me if I'm wrong, or explain it if I'm right?

I think the 911 Carrera does have a louder and better sounding exhaust, and it has a higher-pitched engine sound. I saw a best motoring video and the 911 turbo sounded like it was going to 5000 rpm's. I know that it was just a video, but mabye that is how it sounds.

because of the turbo engine, the turbo has a deeper sounding exhaust than the carrera.

nawww, the reason is because the Carreras are air-cooled, whereas the Turbo is water-cooled. The result is that much of the exhaust note is dampened by the water-cooling in the turbo. Pity huh? turbo should sound a lot more exciting....

If you don't know the answer why do you post some lame statements?
Yes you are right about Carrera being better sounding, the reason is because turbochargers in general act like mufflers, they quite the exhaust down. It is a well known fact among car enthusiasts. And Both Turbo and Carrera are watercooled. From 996 on ALL of the P-cars were watercooled. Before that only 959 had water cooling, it had a watercooled head.
And GT3 I think is the best sounding watercooled Porsche.
Aircooled Carrera RS is the daddy of all.

I DEFINITELY would not use the word "kill", but they do quiet the exhaust a little bit. Turbo engines perform best with an exhaust with very little back pressure. Back pressure works against the energy of the turbine blade, so the less back pressure your exhaust generates, the more freely the turbo will spool up. Many high-performance turbo applications will simply have a catalytic converter and a straight-through muffler if any muffler at all. I got a ticket one time in my Skyline for my exhaust being too loud, so I certainly wouldn't say the turbo "kills" the sound.
