motor & muffler mounts

On the '97 Blazer LS, 2WD, 4.3...

Two things the manual is a little vague on...

How many engine mounts are there?

Also..is there a way to tighten the muffler mounts? I tried the "strap" that goes around the back of the muffler, but it's tight already & the thing still rattles.

As always-thanks!

The muffler is rattling?

Or is the cat rattling?

I'm 99 % sure it's the muffler.
When it's rattling, I can make it stop by putting very slight upward pressure on it by hand.

I figure that if it were loose catalyst in the coverter, it wouldn't quiet down quite that easily.

Don't rule it out quite yet though, but you are probably right.

Replace the muffler.

You have two motor mounts.

Is the rattle coming from inside the muffler or is the muffler vibrating against something?

Not entirely sure; what I've found so far is that with the truck in gear (someone inside on the brakes of course) I can apply very slight upward pressure on the muffler & the rattle stops. Doesn't take much pressure at all.

You need to check it out a little closer. If it is just rattling against something, you may be able to adjust or shim it and make the noise stop.
