This is the very latest 5th Generation 2.0 FSI Turbo?

If it is, then some comparable cars are the Dodge SRT4, Saturn Ion Redline, Nissan Sentra SE-R, Honda Civic Si from the top of my head.

They all fall well short of it though in terms of being complete cars, but the SRT4 is the best performance car.

You'll have to be more specific (re: correct) about what car your roomie got.

As you're in the US, I'm sure he bought a mk4 Jetta WE - which would likely have the 1.8t, not 2.0T. The 2.0T FSI hasn't made it stateside yet, and there's no WE Jetta right now, only the 5-cyl Value Edition for the mk5 models.

Anyway, "the 1.8 will nevAr lose" as mk4 peeps always say. The new 1.8T (modified in 2002 or thereabouts) puts out about 180 hp/torque I believe, easily bumpable to 200 with a bolton/chip or two.
It is an mk4 jetta however, so the handling isn't nearly as sharp as older Vdubs ... Wolfsburgs now are all cosmetic I believe, no sport suspension unless you get a GLI, so it won't handle any better than a stock Jetta.

Shorttake: engine is strong, great potential; suspension will need help. Should be faster with a mod or two than a comparably modded VTEC, since its a VW it has a lower power band and ample torque - advantages over a comparable Japanese car. I dare say any competitor might handle better stock though, it is a moderately-hefty FWD sedan .. never driven an mk4 myself (so its easy for me to hate), I'm sure it still at least feels more connected to the road (i.e. heavier steering) than a Japanese car.

Hopefully he won't have any electrical gremlins / MAF / coilpack issues :grinno:

edit: I also hope he didn't get the 2001 WE, as that had the older 150hp 1.8T. The mk4 WE never came with a 2.0 NA engine though, only the mk3 wolfsburgs .. I can tell you all about the 2.0L 8v, but there isn't much good you'd want to hear :p

well the thing is, it says 1.8t on the back, yet when he popped the hood the engine shows 2.0t. Dunno what to make of that. Not sure on the year, possibly 2001 or 2002.

There is a def cosmetic upgrade compared to the non wolfsburg parked nearby thats for sure. Handling was pretty good, but since i've never been in the older Volks i dont have a comparison.

Im guessing quarter mile in mid 15's. This correct?

Ahh, I bet what it is, is that it says 20V ... not 2.0t :smooch:

I checked and don't see a 2002 WE, so if its 2001 it is the lower-output engine .. still not bad though. Mid 15's sounds about right for the slower 1.8T; with a few bolt-ons, the newer 1.8T jumps to high 13s/low 14s.

I'm almost positive it said 2.0t, but I'll see him on monday and check. He wanted to race me in my 95 saturn sl2 5 speed and my other roommates 95ish gs-t auto. I know he'll beat mine but what do u think about the gs-t?

A stock VTEC can beat a stock 1.8T from VW. Yes they produce more torque at lower revolutions but that does not make them faster. I have always beaten 1.8T 180hp VW cars with my stock 1.6 liter naturally aspirated vtec engine. As far as handling, they are pretty bad compared to many cars.

I have four videos beating the turbos by the way.

Peace.
