Air Box

I have a question on cold air intakes? Im kinda of a cheap person with being in college, but instead of buying a cold air intake I was wondering if a person could modify the stock air box to alow more air flow. Any input would be appreciated.

Yup, sure can. I have eliminated the resonator cavaties and kept most of the stock tubing and plumbing in place. The airbox itself was chopped with a low-speed metal saw to expose the entire face of the filter, but left enough plastic around it to seal the paper filter cartridge in place. Left most of the plastic that faces the engine in place to shield it from ingesting warmed up air that naturally would come off of the radiator, etc. Works quite well. :) I have not dynoed the difference, but she seems a bit peppier.

That works well wolffox but to maximize the airflow. Get a K&N. There about 40 bucks. But you never thow it away, It increases your gasmileage and throttle response. So continue paying 10 bucks only to throw it away 10,000 miles later. Or pay a little more now. Get better gas mileage and Never by a filter again. I will never have any filter other than a k&n in any car i ever own.

I would only spring for a K&N for this truck if I was in the sand all the time. Out where I am, fine dust rules the land. I sold off my K&N for my truck because I could write my name in the dust building up in the intakes *despite* meticulous care, making sure it was sealed, etc. It's ravaged the idle air intake on my CPI fired '95 - throwing away that K&N and putting in your cheap, $10 filter after cleaning the Idle air solenoid and running a can of intake cleaner through the works restored my idle. And the oil stays cleaner longer too. Sorry, but that K&N was not doing it's job, or was an improper fit - but dollars to donuts it was not doing it's job. The Drop-in K&N's are garbage. I might spring for the complete kit with a shielded cone filter if anyone here can also show me an intake that has 10,000 miles on it, with a filter charger product, that is *immaculate*. Ingested dust tears these engines down *quick*.

It is better to pick a cheap intake off of ebay for the CPI engine.

Yep, yep - both of them in fact. Check the profile man, I'm and engineer. :) It's simple child's play to mod the plastic and polymer they pack into all of the plumbing under the hood. Like I said before man, hang tight. When there is a nice day after work, I will snap off detailed photographs for you all. It's pretty neat when done - the truck growls like a tiger from behind, howls like a banshee up front - they put so much restrictive, acoustically matched CRAP under the hoods and into the exhaust on these machines. It does not take much to undo what the GM gods have saddled us with and let your ponies run free. ;)

I wanted to do ram air induction originally. I sat out there in the parking lot with my intake in pieces, pondering over what would be needed. Thought of taking an under-hood scoop off of a Camaro or Firebird V-8, adapting the tubing, etc. Then realized..."It's a truck!" Would not be able to make it work without modifying the core support and the hoodline. Not to mention, think of the things trucks are exposed to - Rain, mud... And nothing dampens spirits more than accidentally sucking up a kid into your intake. :lol:

I've done the stock airbox mod similar to what Wolfox said. Sounds much better and costs nothing. The only disadvantage is you can't be a big talkin' Cool Guy sayin "Yep, I got a K&N under the hood", which really means "I blew $160 to make my truck sound tough and Oh ya, look at this dyno chart that shows 7HP at 4200 rpm" Nevermind that the HP gain is a negligible 1-3HP through the 98% of the RPM range where almost all driving is happening.

This is true but these kits also include better flowing plumbing from the filter to the throttle body. Therefore just cutting the box open would have to be even less HP increase.

True, unless you remove all the resonators and extra plumbing, you really won't see any difference.

Sorry about not getting to you guys sooner on the matter. I have just had a grandmother die and I have been spread every-which-where, mostly trying to get in touch with other family members. Anywho, stay tuned. I am making up a page on my website that will show off my mad ghetto sk1llz0rz. Chopping off the upper resonator that goes around the top of the fan shroud was the worst, but nothing a little bit of aluminim tape couldn't fix and make look pretty. ;) See you folks around later on...

i gotcha man. Mine fits fine. n e way the aftermarket intake kits are alot better. you could get one of those and a k&N filter covers. I dont know just an idea. yeah dont want sand going in there tho that would be bad.
