Gears will be your best bang for the buck in your price range. You could probably get a cheap Nos kit but I wouldn't recommend that. I would do gears or do Xeno's recommendation of CAI/headers. Good Luck

my idea of going big would be to eventually get a big cam and get a port and polish job for it.. or eventually get into forced induction.. those are really the big monster where its at mods..
but, as far BIG is concerned.. i'd say the biggest mod you could get is Xeno's girl.. throw her in the front seat and you'll never beat a honda civic.. and you'll need a new suspension every week to boot...

Can anyone verify if the CAI from slp for the tpi any good? Is it worth the $249? Can i find one with similar results for a way cheaper price?

please do not waste a bunch of money on an intake, you can make one out of pvc and paint it for less than $15 and it will work just as good, and you'll have money for headers and gears and carbs and pistons pushers pumps pimps hoes handles horns holley carbs cold air cans oil filters and radiator fluid
