Firing order? (How's that manual coming, Torch?)

I just spent time troubleshooting my Esteem - without manuals (anybody surprised?) - and in so doing, disconnected the ignition wires but duh! didn't note the wiring order from the coils.
Unless I'm mistaken, the firing order is 1-3-4-2 and the No.1 cylinder is closest to the timing belt, but which coil terminal(s) correspond(s) to which cylinder(s)? Any help appreciated.

BTW, I'm no mechanic, but I was able to determine that my crankshaft sensor is defective. Kragen is getting one for me while I write this ($60) and I hope that this is the only problem. I just want to ensure anybody that, after 172 000 miles, and regardless of being helplessly stranded hundreds of miles from home, I am extremely pleased with my Esteem and would recommend this car to anyone looking for a cost-effective transportation solution.

Cheers,
JaxP

What year and motor do you have? My wife and I have a 2000 1.8 with 64k. It has been a great car with NO problems other than brakes and rotors. We have been told there is a Small oil leak, but the oil level never goes down. I do plan to get it checked on its next dealership service. I recommend this car also.

Hi,

I hope you have figured this out by now, if you have not please email me I'll send you a picture of what goes where (it will be included on the website).

Speaking of which, I'm still working on it.

You're right, the firing order is 1342. Do determine which pole is for #1, rotate the engine until #1 cylinder is a TDC (top dead center) on the firing stroke. Use the crank pulley as a guide. When that's done the rotor will be pointing to the #1 pole on the cap.

As for the crank sensor. If there is any rust of corrosion on the pan, the sensor will be moved further away from the pick up than it should and will cause a no-start condition. Some people put a gasket there instead of silicone when re-sealing, this also moves the sensor too far from the pick-up, causing problems.
