painting a dash

ok i want to paint some of my dash pieces just to dazzle up the interior i have never done this before. any good tips on how to and what paint to buy.

oh yeah or if you know where i can get a kit for it. that would work too. its a 4 dr 2000 cavalier

there was some posts about this a little while ago. imo though i think painting stuff inside your car looks kind of lame.

I refuse to touch any of my interrior with paint. Looks... well, tacky.

well remember if u paint the interior the paint might crack with the heat accumulated inside due to the sun heat

please be more specific about what pieces u r going to paint, because the plastic pieces wont last with the paint the paint will crack

well i have my interior completly painted red and white... i had it done by a friend he used a hvlp gun. came out sweet. when i get pictures of it all installed i will post.

Whats the difference between an hvlp air gun and a regular air gun?

Im not to sure.. lol i dont do paint but i was told that is what he used and his stuff is good work it done peel or crack with heat i think all the prep work is just light sanding and rub lightly with laquer thinner or something.

Kyrlon fusion is good. You can get it at wal-mart or any auto parts store. I've yet to paint mine. I'm going to have a white and blue theme.

I have a 98 z24 and I have done my console, my window buttons, my door lock buttons, and all of my vents. I have a red and white theme and I have had a pretty good experience with painting my interior and I think it looks nice and adds to your look. Yes it can be tacky but if done right it can be a drastic mod. I used white krylon fusion on my vents and red Duplicor Paint & Vinyl on the rest. They're both available at O'Reilly.

YES! Take your time! Patience is your best tool when doing this. You can't see much in my sig but I have a black/blue theme. I used cheap Krylon or whatever they had at walmart. Some of the pieces of my interior have this faux leather texture, which takes forever to sand off. I found the best way is to WET sand it with 200 grit, then go back lightly with 400 grit. Wet sanding saves your lungs from plastic dust and makes it go SO much faster. I'm working on my gauge cluster cover, that was ALOT of sanding, took two hours of hard elbow grease and my bathtub, LOL!

The best tip I can give is when spay painting use many, very very light coats. If you get it too thick with one coat it WILL chip/crack/peel and basically look like crap. I'll put 4-6 light coats on before it becomes solid color, it gives it a nice texture too.

Also, clear coat is your friend! I'm redoing my steering column pieces now because I didn't use any clear and my key chiped the paint. Now it has 4-6 coats of clear too!

your blue in your car looks nice. How did you put your pics in your sig. I would like to do that but am not sure how.

Ah!.. Photoshop, I use it everday here at work. I uploaded it to AF then copied the link into my sig. It would look better if AF didn't put the AF.com in there and re-compressed it to crap quality. I'm gonna take more pics and make another sig in about a month, whenever the weather is decent enough to paint. It's either too hot, too humid, raining, or too cold when I have time to work on it.

A HVLP spray gun is high volume low pressure. It uses more paint, but less air so overspray is supposedly cut down by a lot. Also HVLP guns use like 2/3 of the paint that a normal spray gun would. To spray your interior with a gun would require a fairly big air compressor (around 25 gallons I would think), the spray gun its self and the paint. All of that would cost roughly $700. I used some primer, Krylon fusion, and some spray can clear coat and it has worked just fine. It takes probably a day or two to become completely hardened, but once its hardened, its pretty tough. Its seen -40 all the way up to how ever hot it gets inside your car on 95 degree days and I havent had any problems at all. None of the peices in my car have faded, chipped, cracked or anything. Just be sure to take your time. If you start and think you can get it painted and put back in in an hour or two your wrong. Do it right and take the pieces out and paint them one morning and put them in sometime the next day.

anyone ever heard of that "mystify" spray paint kit...comes with 3 cans in a box...would that work on interior cuz i was thinking about buying that stuff and painting my dash and stuff...and would dark purple and green chameleon interior look good on a black exterior...and i was thinking about putting some purple underglow on my black cav too

I didn't use primer but it's a good idea. A few light coats of color with dry time in between coats and multiple coats of clear plus a good day of drying, expect to spend a few days if not a week or two with unreliable weather, if you want show quality results.

i painted my dash with a red and white theme as well. i used an HVLP gun and it came out real nice. Like stated before, patience is key. It wont be done in a hour so just set aside a day and do it right. You dont want to put them back in too early and have it not dry properly. I think the cameleon paint would look good in a black cavy. Thats just my opinion. The only advice i can give you is just take your time and everything will come out ok. I have no problems with mine
