Hey i have an 84 camaro, i am swapping the 2.8L for a 305. What gear ratios would you recommend for the best low end power? I know i want to go posi, but not sure on the gears yet.

well it depends, are you going to be driving this on the street only as a daily driver? is it only gonna see the strip? how much power are you looking to make with the 305? what rpms will that power be at? the rear gears should be chosen with a mind to what stall converter and what power band you are looking at.

Its going to be my summer car, strictly for the street. I want to make a much power as possible as time goes on, i want to get it the motor in and running first and as i get some money, cam, headers, carb, etc. I'm not sure what powerband the 305 makes the most power, because its not in yet. I just want it to be torqy, but not loose all the speed.

The trouble with changing the gears is that if you want low end torque you have to sacrifice top end speed and vice-versa. There are however a lot of different ratios to choose from each has pros and cons. Luckily, there are quite a few 3rd gen 305 pros around here so I'm sure somebody will have done it and will have some input as far as which gears they prefer.

Yeah, i don't want super low end and no speed, i just want a ratio that gives alot of low and still some top end. Just looking for some input on what ppl are using and how its working out.

3.23 is what the V6's of 84-92 came with, and they are pretty quick off the line. 3.73 gears would get you going fast, you definitaly wouldnt go above 175 mph anymore, but wtf would you be doinig that fast? Its all about the acceleration

I'd say 3.42, or maybe 3.73 if you have a manual w/ OD gear(s)

Its an automatic 7004R tranny.....i don't think it'll go over 175mph. However that would be cool

I would get the engine in and start driving it and see what its like and then think of changing. I bet the stock 6 cylinder gears are very close to what you will want. Get it running and then decide if you can.
