My third and fourth gear doesn't pull as much as my 1 and second. Are all bug transmissions like that? Anyone know where I can get a rebuilt tranny or a good tranny for cheap? my car is a 69 bug

usually 3rd is a little more powerful and 4th is your driving/cruising gear. of course 1 and 2 are he pulling/taking off gears. i rely on my 3rd to pass (like it happens alot) and switch back to 4th. John Muir's guide has a realy good section on what mph you should use your gears for. i can recall it off hand, my stuffs packed away. as far as a rebuild, it's fairly cheap, but not recommended for us newbies. i was quoted by a friend of my regular motor guy a trans rebuild barring major purchases, 300 bones and a 12 pack of whatever he drinks.

You don't have to be limited to a 1969 tranny. Any IRS Bug transmission will work. Sometimes you can score a deal on a good used Tranny. I got one for a Baja project I'm working on for $70. Including the Axles and CV joints.
A good re-built trans will run you anyhwere from $395 to $700 or more, depending on the differential style and gearing. Check places like www.samba.com (http://www.samba.com) or eBay to find a deal on a used or re-built.
