Skid plate bolts

I installed the Skid Row transfer case skid plate and remembering complaints about have the leading bolt heads sheared off I have
thinking about alternatives.

I liked the idea of having a welded intercept piece of metal
in front of the bolts but I don't have the engine guard, just
the transfer case guard plus I am looking for a simpler solution.

I have considered titanium bolts, SS or titanium button head bolts
and several similar solutions. (a good selection of titanium bolts
can be found at www.racebolts.com - download the catalog; the
web is site just shows a few times)

What I am going to try is 3/8" elevator bolts.
If that doesn't work, then maybe titanium button head bolts.

The bolts that are causing me grief are the ones for the very front skid plate (that attaches to the engine skid).

The last time I looked ti bolts were very pricy

I went out yesterday hunting for replacement bolts for my stock skid plate. Everywhere I went (I must live in stupid town) all I got was "I dunno, try this" while being handed an obviously mismatched bolt.

All I found on them (searched XOC) was 6mm (diameter) X 1.0mm (thread pitch). Does this sound right? I'd really like to replace these cheap aluminum ones.

Jens, that sounds right.

My hardware store carries them, and it's a lame hardware store. Do you have Ace Hardware or Lowe's up there ? They should have bins of them.

If that is the correct size I can got to Tacoma Screw and pick some up for you! Grade 5 or Grade 8. They have the best selection of Hardware.(period)! I get all my hardware from them, metric and SAE.

I have not seen the new skids yet but Erick told me the new Skid Row front skid is redesigned so the bolt heads can't get sheared off. I know two MAXC guys just bought full sets of skids from me and I will take some pictures this weekend at Paragon of them.

I haven't had any problems with bolts beyond the front skid, and that's been taken care of by my custom guards.

Todd, looking forward to your pics of the new skids.

Todd must have forgot to take the pictures. I'm one of the guys with the skids so I'll snap a couple when I get home.

Is this like software and we get free upgrades :)

Can't blame a guy for trying

It looks like you posted the same pic twice? Goliath could you crawl further under and take a pic of that bolt head again? It looks like it is up outta the way compared to the old Skid Row front plate.

Here is my solution, until I get the welders to fix me a couple of "bumps" like Schlud has!

Sockethead cap screws, Grade 8! Domed head and easily removed with an allen wrench.

By the looks of things, SR extended the front lip of the engine skid out a few inches, then bent the steel at an angle so the bolts would mount at that angle.

It looks like the front and engine skid will have to replaced to accomplish this effect.

Damn it.

Sorry about the double post (I deleted one), browser kept saying "connection timed out" so I thought the picture didn't upload.

Yes, the engine skid extends forward and then curves upward, the front plate bolts to the engine skid at an angle. This way the bolts are less likely to get sheared.

I didn't even notice until FSR said something.

Good job Skidrow, continuous product improvement!
