Hey I'm building a 1970 chevelle w/ 350. Due to the price of gas I'm trying to get the best gas mileage I can. Would a MSD blaster PN 5900 be a good idea? or should I just get a regular destributar and forget the MSD idea?

I would put a Pertronix igniter in the stock distributor, get great mileage and save $$. Welcome aboard.

Thanks. How hard are they to put in? Do they just take the place of a stock rotor-bug?

You have to remove the distributor to add some spacers on the shaft and then mount the new electronic parts in place of the points. There will also be an extra wire going to the coil. The instructions are real good and it's not hard if you have some auto experience. Once installed you will have to retime the distributor. After that you will have rock solid dwell readings and won't be messing with points ever again. There are also units made by other manufactures to do the same thing but I never seen them. Do a web search to find out more about them.

MSD makes good products. I would look for an HEI distributor upgrade first. Adding a kit to a worn out distributor is just delaying failure. Look at this Summit dist. It is about half the cost of a MSD unit.

Good luck Jim

Jim is correct about adding parts to a worn out distributor, but you can check the bushings for excess play when it is out. If they are loose they can be replaced. HEI's work great but will the large cap rub on a Chevelle firewall? I know it will on a Nova. New electronic distributors with the small caps are also available.
BTW- what is the rest of your set-up? Keep us posted.

Check ebay, just enter Petronix. :smokin: I purchased a rebuilt Chevy sm blk distributor with the Petronix already installed for $83.00.
