Excessive EGR code 0402

I'm getting a DTC code P0402 indicating excessive EGR flow. I had changed the PCV and noticed the new one doesn't fit snugly in the rubber gasket. Could this be the problem?

Probably not. The loose fitting PCV will cause a lean running condition. Check to be sure the EGR is not getting vacuum when it is not supposed to. The excessive flow tells me the EGR is commanded open when it should not be. Also check the DPFE sensor. These are known to fail. Good luck.

It's probably that backpressure sensor since I just cleared the code today and got a P0401 "insufficient EGR flow detected". I'll check that vacuum as soon as I find someone with a vacuum pump/tester to borrow. Thanks for the tip!

Hi I had that same code two weeks ago and I changed out my DPFE or back pressure sensor, its the little Silver box with the two hoses going into it from the manifold and now I have not seen a service engine soon light since try that it should work

Thanks again. I found a DPFE at the salvage yard and put it on. Not sure what I paid for it 'cause I got a mirror switch, two interior door reflectors and some clips for $20. Seems to work OK for three days and then the MIL came back on but, now with a different code (P0544). I now have a slight leak in my EVAP system. I'm sure glad I bought a cheap DTC reader on EBAY!
