'95 Skylark Transmission Problems

A friend is having problems with her '95 Skylark. It's not shifting and seems to be stuck in high gear. It will shift manually with the shift lever however. It's also throwing an SES light. Took it to a repair shop and they said the EGR needed replacing as well as the transmission. Is there any possibility they are taking the easy way out and it might be a simpler fix?
