What are the songs that can just make you break down on those gloomy days. Everyone knows which days Im talking about. The songs that just pierce your soul, and send that shiver down your spine.

The ones that do it for me are-

Tears in Heaven- Eric Clapton
He Stopped Loving Her Today- George Jones
I Hung My Head- Johnny Cash
Yesterday - Beatles
The Sounds of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel
Dust In The Wind - Kansas
Mad World- Gary Jules (From Donnie Darko)

and, the one that will make me tear up every time...

Puff the Magic Dragon- Peter, Paul and Mary

Well, that depends. I'm making a CD for my ex (by moving long story) but all the songs on there I listen to when depressed or something realted.

Eagle-Eyed Cherry: Save Tonight
Bryan Adams: Almost any song (Please Forgive Me is the most)
Coldplay: Clocks, Warning Sign, Yellow, Trouble, and some others
Eagles: Any song
Foo Fighters: Everlong (idk why though)
R.E.M.:Losing my Religion

others...but those come to mind

Smashing Pumpkins - To Forgive
Beck - Lonesome Tears
Elliot Smith - Needle In The Hay
At The Drive-In - Non-Zero Possibility

EDIT:
Beck - Guess I'm Doing Fine
Hurt - both Johnny Cash and Trent Reznor versions

EDIT 2:
Fuck, every song on Beck's Sea Change

"Seasons in the Sun" Terry Jacks (1974)

EDIT: Also want to add- "Last Kiss" most recently performed by Pearl Jam

I obviously don't listen to such a wide variety of music as you guys, but I would have to say Fade to Black by Metallica breaks me down pretty good.

Amon Amarth - Ride for Vengance
Amon Amarth - And Soon the World will Cease to Be
At the Gates - Kingdom Gone
Amon Amarth - The Fate of Norns
some stuff by Dark Funeral
Empyrium - the blue mists of night
DImmu borgir - Mourning palace
Emperor - With Strength I burn
Some stuff by Insomnium
Some stuff by Marduk
Mayhem - You must fall
Ragnarok - It's war
some Windir
Satyricon - Mother North

Lots of black metal songs have some pretty depressing stuff - hell, most of the songs period will sound depressing to lots of people. But you learn to distinguish the especially depressing ones.

The only two i can think of now are Shinedown-45 and Slipknot Vermilion pt.2

Speaking of shinedown their version of simple man made me want to cry, then shoot myself, then slowly bleed to death, then shoot myself some more, start gouging out my eyes, rip off my ears, etc just because that might help me overcome the pain that reached my ears when I heard that song...that version of that song is the most depressing thing ive ever heard

Besides that...
Bright Eyes - Untitled (Lovers Turn Into Monsters)
Pearl Jam - Black
From Autumn To Ashes - Take her to the music store
Underoath - A message for adrienne
Avenged Sevenfold - I wont see you tonight (parts 1 and 2)
A Static Lullaby - Lipgloss and letdown

Im sure I can think of more but usually the sound of someone screaming at me cheers me up even if the lyrics are sad.

Puff the Magic Dragon- Peter, Paul and Mary

Actually, I do find this song pretty depressing. The singers even sound depressed.
One which has not yet been listed:

Frank Zappa - Idiot Bastard Son

Hmmm, thinking of Frank Zappa, Teenage Prostitute - should be depressing, but the vocals and instrumentals are so bizarre and entertaining, that you forget about the subject of the song.

Space Dye Vest - Dream Theater.

Not a good song when you're going through a breakup.

Schindler's List - Composed by John Williams. That's the only song that made me fail to hold the tears in...oh god...I'm...I'm going to....*crys*

And most people who drive jaguars listen to NPR and if you drive a bentley you must listen to classical music. Truck? gotta be country music! American muscle car drivers all listen to foghat. Shit its about time for me to get in my honda, put in my Avenged Sevenfold cd or maybe some Pantera and go down to the rap battle then to go dj a rave because I drive a honda. :bloated:

At my ex-girlfriends dad's funeral they played He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones. What the really screwed up thing about it is that someone payed to have her father killed and they are the ones who had that song played at the funeral. Hell I even started crying when they played that song. Heck her mom went histerical when it started playing. Really the saddest application of a song I've ever seen.

06-04-2005, 06:32 PM
depressing?
or just tear inducing?
nothing compares to you by sinead o'conner always brings a tear to my eyes, expecially when you see it's video.
something strangely powerful about the music, the tone and her voice.... and that hauntingly beautiful opening chord....
but that's not the same as depressing is it...?

bush: glycerine
bill whithers: ain't no sunshine
john lennon: imagine

a couple more but these are the obvious ones.

oh and how could i forget
the verve: the drugs don't work

Guns N Roses - Used to love her

That song reminds me of my ex g/f...

These verses just touch my heart...

I used to love her, mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, oo, yeah
But I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard
Oh yeah
Oo yeah
Whoa, oh yeah

I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
She bitched so much
She drove me nuts
And now I'm happier this way, yeah
Whoa, oh yeah

Im so not right...

^ ^ LoL. That's funny you should mention that song, Davo - I never paid much attention to the lyrics, but I've got the live version on 101 proof, and I always thought it was more-so "uplifting" :). I've listened to it on a couple occasions going to parties to get into a better mood.
