Hey hey there! I'm a broke noob looking for a cheap audio solution. I'm rather peeved at the audio industy at the moment. I just got a new set of front and rear pioneer speakers for my 94 chevy cavalier. The sound quality is excellent, but the bass on my old stock rear speaksrs sounded better than the new ones! What the crap guys? there's no way I can afford an amp and all the other crap a woofer would need. I've got a budget of about 50 bucks and I'm willing to do anything, up to and including duct taping computer woofers to the old sound holes!
My brother and I discovered in the installation process that the new rear pioneers were too big for the original metal frame, so we whipped up this spiffy new wood speakerbox, ran the wires up to the rear dash and set the whole thing up behind the rear seats. That leaves the original sound holes open to any solutions you guys might have.
I'd be ever so grateful for some input.

Perhaps the speakers you bought were more for mid-range or treble. More than likely, you bought speakers that typically go with a sub-woofer. The rear stock speakers are meant to have a bit more low-end else it will come from nowhere else.

Number one the bass depends on the type of speakers you have. If you have 3-way or 4-way speakers the bass won't be that good. You need somthing like 2-way speakers. Another thing is setting them behind the back seat kills some of the bass too. You have to cut the metal housing to make them fit flush. The back seat is dimming the sound from the speakers. Also for $50 you aren't going to get much of anything. I am waiting on my 6x9 Kicker K69 and 5x7 Kicker K57 speakers and paid $158. You aren't going to get quality for cheap.

Do some searching on the net for info related to Passive Woofer design. Most designs require absolutely no wiring, electronic components, and simple designs can be found that would cover those holes with some kind of reactive membrane that should help enhance low end audio.
If you really want to address the specifics of response, consider fabricating some "tuned ports", and port them out through the old speaker holes. Hey! You can even cover each of them with speaker grilles alone. Trunks have incredible potential when it comes to enhancing bass response.
It's only cheap science grrl.

No joke, my good man. Your response has been most helpful. But now I'm wondering about specifics. I'm not looking ofr anything that will shake my teeth out. I'd like a nice, warm bass sound that's not too loud and has good sound quality. What do you guys think about a mid range woofer instead of a sub? Do you think it will give me what I'm looking for, especially since it'll be sitting in my trunk ( which is wee, as you all know).
And what do you think of this?

imo, have your brother build you a custom rear deck made to fit the 2 speakers. should have got speakers with a lower hz as well.

[QUOTE=godsvalkyrie]No joke,.........
The speakers (link) look decent; but I think you'll be less than pleased with the o/p.
Think...at least 6+ inches, with long throw woofers, response down to at least 20Hz, and a nice filter/X-over that should be available at good electronic stores (maybe (just maybe) Radio Shack for not too xpensive.
Look for speakers with deep cone structure, cause that gives you more surface area to vibe, and the perk is that you can go with speakers measuring round 5+, and still get decent bass response.
Remember though, more watts "RMS" is what you should need in speaker capability. See if you can find speakers that run at less than 8 ohms. That could double your output; if (big IF) the amp(s) can handle that or lower.
Forget stuff like "whizzer cones", "treble cones' and "coaxial xtras" mounted above the speaker frame/diaphram. Go Bass only, the trebs n' tweets can be added later.
