1-2-3 or just drive

did this in my sunfire when I first had it, never really knew if it made a difference or not
when your going to race someone off the line......is it better to drop it into 1st......then go 2, 3, and then drive as needed..
or just leave it in drive the whole time
does dropping into 1st give you any better acceleration? (so I've been told)

I always run mine in drive. Even at the strip. But if you like to shift, go a head. Just keep an eye on the tach.

The car will automatically shift from 1-2, so I always run the car in 2nd at the track. Just dont bounce off the limiter or you'll lose the race and if you do it enough risk breaking.

but the computer automatically shifts gears for best fuel econemy...which isnt always for best preformance...
so ripn, off the line what do u run it at? 2nd?

Off the line 2nd gear. the car will not shift out of 2nd unless you manually shift it. believe me ive bounced it off the limiter enough to know.

aaha ic ic, I thought the computer wouldnt auto shift you in the 1st position either
but thats besides the point, question now is, why do you do that? do you get any better acceleration of the line in 2nd rather then drive?

Not really since off the line your still in 1st no matter what the selector is in. Sometimes I just like to stay in a gear longer then what has been programmed into the pcm.

ah...well in that case, it would make sense to go 1-2-3 cause ur letting the engine hit higher RPMS which might be giving you more power then the PCM intended

If you keep it in 2nd and let the tach run to 5900 then shift it seems to giddee up quicker.
If i ever get into with someone i can usualy run to almost 90 mph before shifting into 3rd.

I've noticed that to, you can do 86 in 2nd gear wth GP's. I have the 2000 GT, and I believe I'm limited to either 106 or 112 MPH, can't remember which.
It's sweet going that fast with two gears left :D. My dad would brag about his old Nissan Z doing 70ish in second, then I told him about my 86 and he stopped talking about it.
