96 lumina, trannie problems

My trannie wont shift, i changed the filter, put a new vac modulator in it, and still when you shift into a gear nothing,,,,the old fluid was brownish but not deep brown, i have another on a 96 lumina, but i think its a late 95, cuz the modulators had a big size difference, how hard is it to take out this trannie, i was wondering if just pulling the engine on the other would be easier.
also for about a week before itwent out, you had to rev it to get it to shift.
