1970 Chevelle VS 1993 GT

I was reading the other thread about the 71 Chevelle vs 86 GT and it reminded me of the race I had with a 1969 SS Chevelle 396.
Driving home from work after a late shift, I had a 69' or 70' model year White Chevelle SS with 396 badgeing pull up on me. We came to a light and he stopped on the left side of me. This car sounded wicked mean and nasty, I mean you could tell he had put some wrench time in. This car was shaking and a rumbling, when he reved, I could see the car torque up. He had slapper bars in the rear and skinnies up front with wide tires in the rear. At the light he saw me admiring his car which was immaculant by the way. He reved and I reved back again... The light changed and it was on... I actually beat him off the line and had about a car on him when I hit second, when the RPMs hit 5K I shifted to third and found myself at least 2 car lengths ahead of him. I am thinking to myself, that I am actually winning this race... When I hit third I still maintained about two car lengths on him, but I could her him pulling on me... I wind the car out to about 5500 RPM in third before shifting to fourth and by this time it was all over.. for me not the chevelle... All of a sudden he just roared past me, I am in fourth and I know it is over he is already pulling more than a car on me and by the time I finally shut it down, I am guessing at around 110 he has more than 3 car lengths on me... After I shut it down and he finally slows down, "Dam that chevelle was fast" I pull along side him give him the thumbs up and we both go our seperate ways...
So I had my a$$ basically handed to me on a platter. Serves me right for getting cocky and thinking I was actually going to beat this legend of Detroit Muscle. :nono:
The only thing I can't figure is how I was able to pull on him so early and maintain some type of lead on him until I got to third. I know he was running a automatic... because I could not hear any shifts. That chevelle most of had some killer top end power... Well all in all it was an exciting race...

Sounds like he was toying with you, if he had the power to just slingshot past you. And he had as wide of tires as you said... It sounds like he was letting you get ahead to just pass you like you were standing still.
I do that in my Z quite often... but good run none-the-less.:thumbsup:

I would say that the reason he didn't start pulling until 70 MPH is because he was probably running a stock 3.08 gear and he didn't get his RPMS up into his powerband until that speed. Either that or he was toying you, or had massive wheelspin off the line.
That is certainly a worth opponent to lose to.

Yeah, I'd agree with RedNeck and Robs71Nova. Either he was just messing with you OR you just experienced what a Big Block is good for: top end power.

It's a thing a beauty to hear a Big Block turning at 7,000+rpm...

Yes sir. And they can stand that better then anything on the street/strip.....but don't ever try it in the water box :nono:--unless its VERY well put together :evillol: !
