I have a used 2000 mitsubishi eclipse and its a little beat down but i am willing to fix. It is making a strange noise when im making left turns and the tighter i turn the louder it is. What can this be?

Does it have Aftermarket Rims/tires? If so, it sounds like your tires are too big and are rubbing on your wheel well

Nope they are original i believe, 18 inch i think the guy was telling me. Anyways i dont know crap about cars i think im probably going to have to take it to a mechanic and let him rob me for my money. Got any other ideas of what it might be, its hard to describe the sound the only thing i can think of is it is not a steady sound. Any ideas would be very helpful.

the original wheels are not 18's. so either you have 18's or the guy lied to you and told you they were 18's. the best way to find out is to go outside, look at your tires, and get the numbers off the side. they will be in a format similar to this.... 225/40/18. post that number in this thread and we will let you know if its the tires rubbing.

also, is the car lowered?

Hmm the wheels i just read them they say "16.5 ince rims" I cant find the 225/40/18 format however. I think the car is pretty much all stock but i could be wrong, how many inches should the car be off the ground.

the stock front bumper height is around 4 inches from the ground

the 225/40/18 is on the TIRES not the RIMS.

and ive never seen 16.5 inch rims.

first, tell us what the tires say. should be something like- 205/50/16. i belive thats the stock size. if that matches up, then you might have a problem with your power steering, or some other drive train part.

Im thinking the power steering. When was the last time everything was greased underneath?

yeah because he says it gets worse the tighter he turns.....he needs to describe the sound better.

couldnt it just be a bad tie rod?

i would check the tire size first, then the power steering fluid, then the tie rod/wheel bearing/other suspension related parts

SyK

Im pretty sure its not power steering becuase it doesnt effect the steering. On my old car the power steering was leaking and it got tight in the wheel and the power steering fluid is full. I found the format you were talking about and it says P205/55 R16 .

ok so its not the tires and its not the power steering fluid. you will probably need to get the tie rods or wheel bearings checked.

Hmm does that usually cost alot? Thanks for the help btw , you have been very helpful.

it would depend on what it is. if its the tie rods, then those could be kinda expensive. ive never had mine replaced so i couldnt give you a price.

but whatever you do, do NOT go to the dealership unless you still have a warranty. this could be covered under warranty, if not, they will charge you out the ass for it

well there are so many things that can go wrong with a car that its impossible to make a list of things and how to fix them.

i just did a quick google search for 'tie rod replacement' and i came up with this site.. http://www.carcarecouncil.org/Steering_Suspension/tie_rod.shtml

seems like a good site. you could probably find some good info from that site.

I finally thought of something to explain the sound my car is making. Have you ever seen The Price is Right? Whenever they spin that wheel it makes that noise.

i'm not that keen on the newer cars, and i'm not sure if this applies to the eclipse, but my celica i used to have did that and it was the cv joints. not too expensive but make sure that is what it is before you go out and buy them (if that is the problem)

Yeah, that for sure sounds like a CV joint problem. Better get that shit fixed or your wheel could fall off (happened to me in my old Sebring...POS!!!) Also might wanna check your front axel if your CV joint is bad

Thanks for help everyone it turned out to just be a bad bearing, had the mechanic fix it and it stopped making noise. However I have one of those Haynes Manuals and I had thought it was a outboard Cv Joint becuase the manual descibes this as a "clicking noise" which it kinda is but kinda not. But hopefully it was just the bearing.

eclipsed4utoo

yeah it sounded like something a bad bearing would cause. theres so many things that can go bad in the suspension that its hard to pinpoint what it is exactly
