I am using my moms computer because I have no other way to get internet now and this thing is slow as hell. It is an HP. It has a 2.8 ghz Celeron and 512 mb of ram. I have stupid errors pop up and slow on EVERYTHING. I updated spybot and ran it. Got 117 things. She just noticed this week it got slower so I came over and found that out. I would guess its viruses but I scan and dont find anything. I try to do a system restore and get this, not a single one will work. Some are ones I made with the computer and others through spybot. I know a good bit about computers but right now I am stumped. If I can use the command line to restore or something I know how to use that. Also I STILL get this gay pop up about some new offer. Also, it only happened once but I clicked IE and it wont connect, even when I am online. Then the damn thing kept opening windows, nonstop. The number kept rising and once it got to about 63 I unplugged the computer because I could do nothing. Can anyone help?

Something not many people know is that one program of it;s type (spyware removal, antivirus) rarely removes everything possible from your system.

Run the following software in addition to what you have already run:
-Ad Aware SE
-http://www.pandasoftware.com/ has a free online based virus scanner
-NOD32 (well worth the money)
-Microsoft Anti Spuyware Beta

Then do a full defragment of your hard drive and make sure you have at least 25% free.

Set your swap file to the maximum amount of available hard drive space:
Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance -> Settings -> Advanced -> Change -> Enter the max. free space on your hard drive.

Then come back and we'll try some different things if it doesn't help. :)

Also, the fact your running a celeron chip will be slowing it down massively compared to a P4 simply because of L2 cache architecture etc. Finally, do you know what the cache on your hard drive is?

For performance gains, it could be worthwhile purchasing a small drive, about 40 gig, with a 8mb cache to run Window and most of your programs on, keeping your music, documents, less frequently used programs on your existing drive.

Oh yeah, what FSB speed too? Gotta love 400mhz...

It might be all the services on your windows slowing it down. Check blackviper.com and do all the supertweaks, and other stuff, it will make you PC run much Faster. I myself am using a celeron, it is ok, runs pretty fast (2.91Ghz, 400mhz fsb) and don't think your processor will make your comp run slow. Another thing you can do instead of buying a seperate HD is partition it, I have one HD but it looks like I am running 3, it help the windows run better.

 Celeron architecture is about 1/4 as efficient as P4 architecture, so yes the chip has something to do with it. No, partitioning your hard drive won't make fuck all difference compared to a new one with an 8mb cache. In fact, will do 2/10ths of fuck all for your speed. And definately doesn't help "windows run better".

:werd: If you can afford to lose a bit of data you will probably forget to backup, go for it.

Try booting into Windows Safe Mode and then run all your virus and spyware stuff. Some viruses will not be removable in normal Windowz virus scan.

Ohh well, partitioning does help organizing though. I am using Celeron because I got a 2.2 for $40 3 years ago, WAY cheaper than any p4 back then. Formating will make it much faster, turn off the unnecessary services, it'll help.

grey popup ads? that sounds like the windows messenger service. go here:

http://www.grc.com/default.htm

and download "shoot the messenger" and learn more about network security. there are a few other applets that will be of intrest to anyone who connects to the internet and is concerned about security.

I haven't been able to post for a long time because I didnt have a computer to use. But yeah, my moms computer still sucks balls. If you turn it on and let it set it opens up 40 IE windows and I have to close group to get rid of them. Some of the windows say stuff like Mortage and some anime porn thing. Lots of random stuff. Also that little window that asks you to connect or stay offline comes up a lot. I scanned for viruses and found 3. But they couldnt be removed. I scanned with updated spybot and it finds new things every time. Also I use Ad-Aware updated and it finds a couple things. But its not really my problem unless I come over to use it. But I would like to fix it anyways.

Ok first of all dont be bitchin about 2.8ghz and 512ram. I am running a p2 400mhz and 128mb ram. I cant play games or anything but it is a lot faster than it used to be because of a couple things. First of all I am not a big computer guru so these are simple things you can do yourself. Hell a blind gerbil could probably do it.
First click on start then run then type in msconfig
on here go to startup and then go apeshit clicking things off that you dont NEED when windows starts up that will also take care of some adware stuff.
Also look under services and uncheck anything that doesnt say microsoft by it.

Also if your like me, I really dont care if my computer is pretty, matter of fact its so old and crappy (windows 95 was breaking news when this computer was bought) special pretty things slow it down a good bit.
Click start then right click on my computer then go to properties there is a tab labeled advanced, click that then click the button under performance, uncheck anything that is pointless to you such as the animation of maximizing, most importantly the last box that says to use visual styles. Its not as pretty but it will speed it up a good bit.

Also like the other guys said, defragmenting and cleaning up the registry will make a huge difference, hope this helps a little bit.
