my dad let me take the vette out tonight, first time since he got it back
its 10 at night so i go pick up my buddy and cruisin.
after leaving a club scene a new porche turbo pulls up on the side. young looking guy so i look at him, give him a smerk and look forward. light goes green and he doesnt bite. oh well
thought the night was dead so i droped off my buddy at like 2 in the morn. i jump on the freeway and there's some kids in a cobra. not sure on the year but its the 95 ish body style. so could have been anywhere from what.... a 94-98?
so they zoom by me and i thought, why not. havent raced in like 6 months. i catch up to them and they see me coming and they pucnh it.
i punch it just enough to catch up to them and stay even.
now i have a thing with doing this, i stay even with them, though there at full throttle. they guy in the passenger seat looks like the happiest man alive. you can read his mouth.
"HELL YEAH FUCKIN GO MAN"
finally i punch it and just take like 4 cars in a matter of seconds. at 130mph i shut down.
the cobra pulls up and there just happy to have raced a corvette. yelling "HELL YEA, YOU FUCKING ROCK DUDE"
i slow down to normal pace, and head home.
thinking to myself. "hey, i finally have something to post in the racing section"
lol

C5's are like snacks for me. I want to race some C6's!!!
I found out the hard way today that I REALLY need a clutch. Went to the track, and my trap speeds are about right, but I can't launch correctly without getting a TON of slipping from the stock clutch. 14.108 at 105.23 MPH.

whats your regular time? cause eating them like snacks is hard to do. running high 12's is a pretty fast car. if your eating them like snacks, what are you running without the bad clutch, 12.6?

Well, I run 5800 feet above sea level.
Stock C5's run around 14.5 at 101MPH.
Right now on this crap clutch, I run 14.1 at 105. I haven't had a problem with a C5 in a while. The Z06's put up a much better fight.
As much as I hate to use the adjustments for my altitude, and what I could run with a good clutch.....
I bet on a very nice racing day, with a good clutch, and sea level, I could pull off around a 12.4 at 113.

nice, a way to tell the years of the 94-98 Mustangs, are the 94-95 Mustangs have the horizontal tail lights, and the 94-95 Cobra's didnt come with the bulged hood (It came with a regualr GT hood). The 96-98's had the vertical tail lights, and the Cobras had the scooped hood. 94-95's also had the 5.0, and 96-98's had the 4.6..

Aren't dads the coolest? I like taking my dad's 3KGT out for a run. Really, due to my past driving experiences, I can't legally touch any of my parents cars. I had to sign a waiver. But every now and then, when my mom's outta town, my dad let's me take his car out. Which isn't very often. Maybe once every 4 or 5 months. Still have yet to race him either. But yeah, how does your VR4 compare to your dad's vette?
Also, sounds like a fun race. I probably would have done the same as the kids in the Cobra. Even if I'm in my Civ and I see a car that I know will kill me, I atleast try to get a run with them, ya know, just to see how fast they really are. Good kill. L8...

wtf? so vr4's would be running like a 15 flat at your track, and viper srt-10 would run like a 13 flat when its usauly a 11.8 second car. lol that sounds insane. what track is this you go to? in what city?
what mods you got? i'm getting interested in your car :)
my vr4 beats the vette in the beginning, and even through a 1320, but up top he edges me out a little. this was before the carbon fiber hood and the racing clutch.

Track is Bandimere Raceway. Outside Denver, CO in Morrison. Track altitude is 5860 feet above sea level.
Your VR-4 would be better off than an N/A car up here. Boost helps a ton. They say that most boosted cars lose a half second running here, and most N/A cars lose a full second. It really depends on the day. And those are rough numbers. I have heard of guys running 1.4 seconds better off the moutain.
Here is my clip from yesterday....Like I said rolling off the line.
http://www.knighthawkvideos.com/mrluos/track1.wmv
The car is a cam'd LS1 car. Stock heads, full exhuast. Most bolt-ons, no tuning.
Correction factors...
http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/altitude.html
Actual times = 14.108 at 105.23
Adjusted using bottom chart = 13.08 at 113.36
And like I said, terrible clutch.
Go find a new Z06 when they come out.
Once my new motor is in, okay. They would probably still beat be, but not by much.

I have a SPEC Stage 5 sitting on my kitchen table. :evillol:
Just don't see the point in installing it now, seeing as I will have the motor out here in a couple months.

yup turbo cars do much better in higher altitudes compared to n/a cars. the reason is because the way n/a engine breath relies heavily on the weight of the atmosphere. generally speaking idealy if a n/a car is a sea level, you will have the weight of 1 whole atmopshere ( 14.7 psi ) going into the engine. this would be measured in the absolute scale. the boost gauges that we read are in guage scale. so if our boost gauge read in absolute scale, when we hit 0 it would actually be 14.7 psi. however on n/a engines this is impossible. the reason is becasue the vacuum ( high pressure = weight of atmosphere, going into a lower pressure= the the engine ). this type of suction has to go thru the valves, the bends on the intake runners etc. so a very efficient engine running at WOT would probrably be able to get like 95% of the weight of the atmosphere in it.
the higher you go, the less atmopsheretic pressure you have to go into the engine. our boosted engines doens't get affected as much since we actually put positive pressure into the engine. the best way to think about this is that if you put your hand over a intake tube on a n/a engine, you will feel the air being sucked in. if you can somehow put your hand inbetween the intake pipes in a turbo or super charged engine, you will feel the air being blown in.
now the downside is that while we do better in higher altitudes, n/a engines do better in the heat. you know hte reason for that already so i won't bother going into that.

ur vette would kill a 94 though 95 or a 96 though 98 stang either way but to let u know 94 though 95 = 240 hp but a 96 up is 305 hp plus they are 4v so the 96 pry would put alittle better of a fight but still 350 vs 305 huge diff so u would kill it either way.

You probably would have run about what a stock LS1 does at sea level, lol. YoungVR4, nice run with the Cobra. It must be totally awesome to drive a Vette!

I am going to guess about half a second for N/A cars.
Next time at the track, ask a track official what the DA is. That is what actually matters. Density Altitude. That measures air pressure, heat, altitude, humidity, and gives you one number. I normally run at around 6400 DA. Ideal is of course zero.

Yeah. Ahh, the track officials here wouldn't know what DA is, lol. But I'm pretty sure the elevation is in the 1500-2000 mark. About all of KY is atleast a 1000 ft and the track is right smack in the middle of the tip of the Appalachian Mountains.
Anyways, I know from past experiences with other tracks further down the state its been nearly 2 tenths faster in the 330 (which is the race distance at the normal track I race at) and that would be huge for 1/4 times, lol. Now most of that is probably traction, but the elevation does probably drop atleast 500 ft, if not more.

Correct me if im wrong but arn't you supposed to run faster the higher you go in elevation based on the denser air you get a more condensed colder charge for compression allowing your car to go faster = sea level is the slowest

its the exact opposite, as i mentioned earlier, the higher you go, the less atmospheretic pressure you have to force in air into the engine, it doesn't matter how the engine breathes.
the best way to describe it in non car terms is that the higher you go up on a moutain, like lets say you go to mount everist. you need to carry oxygen tanks as you get higher up becasue there is less and less oxygen as you get close to the summit. this is because the air is less dense. it also effects boiling point of water. if you try to boil an egg up high in the moutains, you can't, cause theres less pressure on the water, and it will evaporate easily in boiling but the water will not be hot enough to cook an egg. this is alway why people who live up in high in the mountains needs to take naps daily or else they will over exert themselves from the lack of oxygen.

i major in automotive engineering. this is basic stuff that we learned in the earlier classes. the professor would do a demonstration with how pressure effect boil point. he has this appiratice where the main portion is this big bulb of water, and it will reduce the pressure being applied on the water, when you heat it up, you see the water boiling and evaporating, but when you touch the water thats boiling, its still room temperature.
the rest of the atmosphereic pressure with car stuff has to do with Pressure vs volume diagrams that i honestly forgot, but thats you sort of graph out the volumetric efficiency of an engine.
its honestly a great school, turbo2nr is thinkin about transfering to my school, it would be cool to see him around campus.
