My mom replaced the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with a:
2004 Black 5.3L Chevrolet TahoeZ71 with 16,700 miles. The pictures will be posted next week when we take custody of it. It is going to be PiMpIn good times.

I've sadly learned that the gear ratio maybe only a 3.55. Although great on gas unloaded towing will be a horror. Instead of taking 8 hours to get to highway speeds it will take 8 days. HOPEFULLY it will be 3.73s or 4.10s so this way it won't be as bad. I worked for a friend's dad who would let me use his truck and trailer that he uses for SPCA confenscations to ship the horse. Now I can pretty much stop working and concentrate on school now that we will have our own rig. :iceslolan

Now all we need is a drop ball and ball mount, brake controller, proper wiring or adapter, and a trailer.

tman
04-10-2005, 01:31 AM
The tahoe may already be ready for trailering. If it has the factory tow package(factory hitch, 8-pin connector), there will be a harness that can solder to the brake controller, then connect to a center under the dash. Then you plug in a fuse underhood and your brake controller is ready to go, no wires to really run.

I have a 2001 silverado 5.3L 3.73 Positraction, and it tows like theres nothing back there with about 4000 pounds. I know horse trailers are heavier, how much do you plan to tow?

Edit: typed in gear ratio incorrectly. Should have been 3.73, not 1.73. I suck at typing.

I'm not hating on anyone in particular. It's hard to be objective on things that are ingrained culturally around you. I understand that. But DON'T ask me to like it. It is ABSOLUTE OVERKILL for what he needs.

And a RWD V8 ute is going to do a FUCKLOAD better job of towing ANYTHING then a 'SUV', and be cheaper to run, less harsh on the environment etc etc etc.

Unless he has people to haul as well. Then you're going to need that truck to tow and then another car to carry your people around. An SUV kind of does both jobs. Which, in that situation, is better for the environment since you're only using one vehicle.

BTW, where are those pictures NYCowboy??

Well, even a Trailblazer, which is a midsize SUV with an I6 engine gets better gas mileage than a Tahoe, and it can still tow somewhere around 5-6000 pounds, should be plenty for a trailer and a couple of horses.

I like it how people who have no idea what they're talking about like to jump on others for ruining the world. I hate the grocery getting H2's as much as the next guy, but if you need to haul 2 horses 4 people AND all their riding gear, there is no freaking way you're going to do that in a pickup truck. What do you do if it rains and all your leathers/saddles/boots are in the bed of the pickup? Btw, how do trucks with the same engines as their SUV counterparts get better gas mileage? The weight difference is negligible at best. Lets see.

2004 Silverado: 13-17 city 17-21 Highway

Save the environment! Get a pickup! bahahahahaha...oh, good times

Btw the trailblazer is rated at up to 6000 pounds WITH optional 4.10 ratio, however the gas mileage of that vehicle is only 14mpg city 18 mpg highway.(source http://www.chevrolet.com)

Anyone who has experience trailering heavy loads will tell you a V6 or I6 is definately NOT your first choice for towing due to lack of usable power and poor acceleration under load. Not to mention the other unfavorable characteristics of a smaller vehicle like the trailblazer such as handling, braking etc.

Yes if you have a death wish. The rating is 6400lbs with weight distribution/sway control type of crap on it. That crap is expensive and for sissy horse trailers. We are pulling a livestock trailer. Not including the shity tow rating its a TERRIBLE tow vehicle(the trailblazer) due to the short wheelbase it will create a LOT of sway on the trailer. I used sway control once and I almost ended up in a ditch with a 35k car trailer with a 150k car inside.

A pickup is not an option right now. If we were to get a NICE pick up it would probably be a fully loaded 2500HD Duramax/Allison. I have friends with trucks and a truck and trailer from work but it a pain in the ass to drive. It's a 2003 Powerstroke Diesel Long Bed FX4 Offroad Crew cab. The trailer I haul horses with on the rare occasion is a 28' polo trailer its impractical to use to haul my mom out to a county or state park with. I can't stay or leave the trailer there. Its more convient you to have the SUV.

1. I'd NEVER drive a civic. I won't even drive it to put on a flat bed for work. Usually I dont need to drive the cars since I am pretty good at backing up.
2. My horse probably can do the 1/4 mile faster then a civic could.

Well I need to give a little credit and shout out to my momma dukes cause she entered a hunter pace at the barn and got second place. My horse has to be the best horse there. Last week I let one of the barn kids take him to a ropin session in Cowtown,NJ and he shitted on everyone. I plan on showing him this summer some and grabbing lots of firsts. For his age(going to be 19) he is a GREAT horse and still VERY athletic, versitale, and WILLING to learn new things. Sorry to brag bout him but he's the man!

I hate to admit it. OZ you were 100% correct. I did some research about a bunch of vehicles that could have been used as an alternative to the Gas guzzling Tahoe. I know the Tahoe is luxurious and all, but I can't say it was necessary. Here is what I came up with...

How do you expect my horse to do that. He can't even get on a ramped or non-ramped straightload trailer. But I gave up on using my phone because it would have costed me a boat load. I am trying to find my friend's digital camera how he lost it is beyond me. It isnt even one that is the size of a medium sized cell phone either. When I find it you guys will have pictures. I bet we will have a trailer before I find the camera. If so you guys will get pictures with and without a trailer hooked up.

Hey Oz, don't be hating the SUVs man.

I find it that they are very practicle. Shoot you can't carry 20 kilos of stash in a pickup running 100 miles an hour from the cops unless it flies all over the hyway. With an SUV at least it stays inside nice and dry and so are the occupants.

For being a truck based vehicle it drives like a damn caddy. For a 45,000 dollar truck it drives straight as an hour and has all the goodies. I could get used to it. But I am going to be needing to put some Firestone RideRites in to keep it level. Definitely going to need some LT(light truck) rated tires. I put my toolbox in to take it where I do an apprenticeship and the tires went to hell just from taking a 150 pound box(with tools in it) no more then 4 miles. So much for these goodforayear Wrangler AT/S holding up with a trailer. Those LT rated tires will DEFINITELY desissy it. So will our ball mount with a 2 5/16 or 2" ball on it. It is going to be fun in the summer watching people trip over it for walking too close. :evillol: I still have to drive it for myself hopefully tomorrow mom will let me take it for a spin. She cant stop fucking driving the thing and she says she hates it. I COULD take it out now since I do have the registration(a copy of it) but that'd be um deadly.

Mom let me drive it. I have to say it looks like it's more truck then I expected. It got on the parkway with a enterance ramp no bigger then 500ft and was doing sixty 3/4 threw it and that wasn't close to flooring it. I used to "fix" a tree on one of the trails and I ended up pulling straight out of the ground. The tree was of decent size too. 1-2 Ft around and 10-11 ft high. We also hooked to a trailer and pulled to the barn yard and the surgery around the block with one horse. even though had no brakes did fine. Oh and mom don't know about doing either LOL.
