A Soldier Now And A Soldier In The Past

I dont think this really belongs in politics or current affairs
Is it just in the movies or is there a big difference being a soldier now and in the past? In Vietnam movies it shows soldiers on their down time in cities, getting laid (Me So Horny), drinking beers and it seems like they can be themselves on their downtime. But when i see Iraq, the soldiers are in the middle of the desert, in tents, drinking non-alcoholic champagne on New Years. Living, breathing Army and just doing their job. Do they ever just stop, take the hum-vee to bagdad and chill out? Grab a bud?
Somebody straighten out the facts for me...

I was talking to one of my friends who was on leave for the last 3 weeks and for him that's basically what happens. He says he doesn't mind since he's just happy to be alive at the end of the day. But he said that a few people that he knows actually hung out in a couple of Saddam's mansions for a few days...I dunno if he was just trying to mess with me or not.

From what I seen and heard from a couple of friends over there, they do chill around the camps. Going into town in Iraq is different from Vietnam. There was a safe zone.
In Iraq, the only real guranteed safe zone in Irag qre the camps. But they say it can be fun. It's war or w/e you wanna call it. It's not all fun but it has its times.
Just how they put it. Also, if you check out ebaums and some places like that, you'll see videos sent in from soliders in Iraq and some of the stuff they do. Ain't bad. You could also check out some other sites, if ya know what I mean. :naughty:
I mean...*cough* What??? :dunno: I'm innocent!

LMAO... that was partly a joke
Notice how i said, "straighten out the facts for me" at the end
And how should i know if thats really what happened in vietnam or not? I wasnt there. Thats why i ask
Do soldiers in Iraq ever get a chance to drink some beers? Cause when i saw how they had non-alcoholic champagne on new years, i thought things must be more strict now

I'm saying, What are you going to do there? As has now been stated (maybe I should have clarified myself) Outside of the camps it's really not at all safe for an american military personell.

Believe it or not, the U.S. does abide by the host country rules. Alcohol is illegal in Iraq. However if our boys/girls in the armed forces get R&R on a Navy ship in the Gulf or get to Arab Emerites(SP) they definitely get a beer or two there!!!

back in vietnam you had a country divided in 2, you had the south region that supported you (more or less, not everyone liked all these white people in their area) and you had prostitutes and bars and all kinds of fun....so you had a place to go to relax from the front lines..in iraq, although there are different tribes, they all follow the same rules basically for religion and aspects of life...they pretty much despise americans and other allied troops being there though it is necessary...and lets face it, they have a boring lifestyle too..no bang bang 5 dolla me love you long time lol
lets not forget that media in this day in age can reach everyone within seconds and they have freedom of press, whereas vietnam you had thick jungles, not wide open easily visible areas, you could kill a man there and no one would say a thing, in iraq everyone can see what youre doing and hear all the way up the chain of command i mean, the guy shot a wounded soldier and gets canned for it and in vietnam you were told to make em dead and make sure they stayed dead...society these days

WOW, you're complaining that you can't take out your anger by killing a few civilians here and there. You make your country proud.

I have a friend thats like 20 years old and just came back from a tour from Iraq. He tells me that they aren't allowed to go to the city to have a good time because the risk of getting killed is high.
I dont know though...but that is wat he told me.

Wow, that's just ignorance at it's finest. You do know that the majority of the taliban consists of Saudi extremists, not Afghans. The Mujahideen are Afghans, maybe if you read on some history you'll see they are nothing like the taliban. Next time you want to make fun of a country and or culture, at least try not to look like a retard and spew out lies...I believe thats your leaders job.

this is a nice simple thread. lets not try and turn this into another bush bashing, or calling out on bush type of thread.
Gotti, typically, the military, wherever it is, follows the standard rule of 21 to drink. Occaisionally, in some areas, in some countries, due to the mixed population, or mixed services on the base, it mandates the drinking age to what ever it is in that particular country.
follows the particular addage, old enough to die for your country, but not old enough to walk into a bar and order a beer.

do they even have a place to go for beer in Iraq tho? And if they got some would they be able to bring it back to the base?

Why the hell do so many people in this country think midle-eastern countries don't have modern day things like bars,TVs, PS2s, good cars, and other things. You ask someone some dipshit in this country what Egypt has and they're say "uhh...camels and pyramids?"

I'm taking about people in general, some people in this country seem to think middle eastern countries are void of common things like bars, clubs, and gizmo-like electronics.
