help with power steering

my 92 gt's power steering is acting up. when i am stopped completely and try to turn the wheel the power steering does not work at all. but when i rev it up a little bit and get the battery volt gauge goes up the power steering works fine. then when it idles again and the volts drop the steering does not work again. what is the problem?

It sounds like the bearings in your powersteering pump are going out. I have had that happen to me in other cars. It causes your engine to lug down with the extra added friction from the bad bearings. Either that or a seal in your rack and pinion system is bad causing for more fluid to be needed to add to it's loss

what does your motor idle at, rpm wise? i suspect that the vanes in the pump are worn out, which would cause waaaaaay insufficient pressure at idle. if you're idling at around 600-800, i'd say i could be right, unless you're leakign lots of fluid out the rack or PS fittings.

another thing... if your charging volts go up significantly when coming off idle (i'd say more than 1 or 2 volts) i'd say you have a bad alternator. i got that problem (charging at roughly 8-10 volts @ idle) when i installed a 3-piece underdrive kit... replaced my alt with a 200amp 3g and it solved the problem.

i also noticed today that my a/c started to not work either. it will not blow cold at all.

That could be your problem right there. I am sure that you know an A/C compressor pump has a seperate clutch that kicks on when your A/C turns on as well......buit if you don't now you do. When it kicks on it will draw power from your electrical system, also causing your RPM's to drop from the extra force being put on your engine. If that cluch is going out or getting stuck it will drain a lot from your engine. Keep your A/C off and disconnect the wires going to the compressor to see if that helps at all. If it does not do as StangNut and I advised. Check that alternator or look into a new Powersterring pump
