RE: reprogramming remote

I,ve read all of the 97 bonneville specific reprogramming info but I do not know how to tell terminal 8 from terminal 4 on the data link connector. I also need to know if the data link connector is the recepticle located directly in the center beneath the dash on the driver's side. Is it the black recepticle with eight inlets? Are they numbered from left to right or right to left? Please Help.
