1997 T-Bird Clunking Noise in Rear

My 1997 T-Bird (with 84,000 miles) makes a noise (clunk-type) in rear, sounding like something is loose in the trunk - or a loose tailpipe - both of which have been checked and rechecked - and it's not those. This is a single clunking/thud-type noise each time I go over small bumps in the pavement, or even expansion strips sometimes. I have had mechanics check the shocks and the anti-sway bar but they said that isn't the problem (I still have my doubts). Could there be anything else that might cause such noise? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Its a small arm underneath that connects to an anti-swaybar.... like a idler arm.. it has a rubber ball but no way to grease it ...no fitting.. There are 4 of them ... 2 in front - 2 in back. The rubber deteroriates and leaves metal to metal. When you replace them.. and you will replace all of them.. get ones that have grease fittings so they can be greased regularly.

Thanks, compewterman, for reply. Will check them out - would be great if that is the solution. Appreciate your input. BTW - do you mean there are 2 arms in the front of the car and 2 arms in the back of the car - or 2 arms in front of the swaybar and 2 arms in back of the swaybar? Just to make sure I don't come across like an idiot to the mechanic - lol.

Hey! I have been going through the exact same thing with my 95 bird. In the front it's the swaybar links. They connect the swaybar to the spindal assembly. I have been looking to replace them. But, I didn't realize they were in the back too. I have found them for as low as 33.00 dollars a set for the front. I will check my rear ones to see if that is the problem there.

Yes ....there are 2 in the front.. and 2 in the rear its best to just a lift or hyd jack so you can get them to where you know they are ready to come off.. no they are not that hard to do diy- do it yourself. Be careful of cheap imitations they wear out quickly also. I used moog parts.. a little more expensive but they work like oem with the exception of having ( these do) grease fittings.
