Oye. Tough question unless anyone has done it and measured it. I would err on the safe side and get maybe 8 to 10 qts. If you have leftovers you can save it till next time, or maybe you get another Mercon vehicle next, etc. And Mercon isn't terribly expensive stuff, at least compared to the Mercon V you would need if you had a newer Taurus. On brand: Valvoline seems to be consistently good for vehicle fluids; it may also be the most abundant in supply, and, indeed, the only Mercon V I've ever seen in a store is Valvoline.

If you don't leave the pan off for very long, about 6 quarts will do. You need to run the vehicle for a little while before you check the level.

In case anyone cares, Wal-Mart carries Castrol Mercon V for about $3.00 a qt. Price was recently raised on all their oil products.
