Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out here. I am currently planning on getting a 91-93 240sx hatchback. I'm pretty much just waiting for someone to sell one locally thats standard.
Anyway, i will be getting it in the next couple months and i plan to do some minor upgrades this summer.
I am looking for advice on cold air intakes, exhaust systems (probably 2.5" to keep noise down) and headers. Opinions on brands? etc.
Any suggestions would be great. I live in Canada so if you know of any canadian online shops that i can order from that would be great.
Thanks
Kerbie

uhmmm read FAQZ, name brands depends on $ i love HKS, but then its a $ Q. pick a car magazine (super street) and look at the back of it. they have many # and wesites for car parts.
good luck with the car! keep us posted

Just stick with the least expensive intake and header you can find. Doubt you'd be able to tell the difference between a $500 header vs the < $200 PaceSetter header unless you looked under the hood. As for exhaust, I'd start with just a straight muffler.
Try this: Run your car flat out in stock form. Then remove your air filter and exhaust behind the catalytic converter. Run it again. Can you tell the difference in acceleration? Even the most expensive exhaust will be more restrictive and heavier than the open pipe you just tested.
Through similar experiments I found the stock muffler and cat to be the main power restrictions in the exhaust, not the stock pipe.
Look on 240.org at the custom short intake. I just got done with that and its very much worth it. The only thing I did different is buying the K&N FIPK rather than grinding the corners off the MAF to accomidate the cone filter.

Exhausts are not just designed to muffle sound. A properly sized exhaust will make more power than no exhaust. The tubing diameter and total amount of bending will be the ultimatum in power made.
The point behind a performance exhaust system is to maintain exhaust gas velocity. This maintaining of EGV promotes scavenging. As anyone knows, after combustion, there is a small amount of ehxuast left in the combutstion chamber. Scavenging will remove a lot of this increasing the VE of the engine.
Side effects being the tubing diameter size will also determine what RPM you make power. May not be a negative side effect for you, but the stock system promoted scavenging at a much lower RPM.
Even on a NA engine, 3" showed substancial gains around 4500RPM. Despite what anyone says, you should always shoot for max power at the highest RPM possible. With our cams, you shoudl shoot for around 5500RPM. 3" will do that no prob.
Intakes work the exact same way. They will enhance your exhaust if sized properly, which most are already.
Pacesetters are not on the top of my list. My header from them wasn't very good at all. It leaked constantly until I went turbo. On hte head to header flange, the ball joint, and the header to exhaust flange. Main problem being the head to header flange wasn't machined after welding the primary tubes to it so it was very uneven. I'd go with hotshot if I did it again.

yes iv had the hotshot header for 2 years now and no problems at all. No rust or anything (heard some of them rust). I have a cat and 2.5 inch custom exhaust with the hks hi-power muffler. It sounds good man, and when you romp the gas....everyone know's it. But at low RPM the car sounds like a beast. Not like your average rice boy pissed off bumble bee. But let me say this, if you plan on going turbo....dont even bother with these mods. Unless you have money or know you can sell these parts later on. Luckily my lil bro wants my shit.

i dont plan on going turbo any time soon. this car is going to cost me enough for the time being. Just looking at spending maybe $1000 on it this summer, so i figured intake, exhaust, mayber headers, and some strut bars. thats about it for now. If i get some more money, maybe some tien lowering springs.
Next year i might get some rims. and if all goes well, ill save up money for and sr20det swap the following summer.
