No. The clutch slipping has nothing to do with crankwalk.

Uh, don't worry so much about crankwalk. Buying a dsm isn't dissimilar from buying any other car. See if the car has been maintained, ask the selling why s/he is selling. Personally, I would check for collision damage, but I'm a little bitter from my own dsm buying experience ;)
Some car buyers are more hardcore than others. You could do the following things, not that they're necessary; pop off the oil filler cap and check for yellowing in the valve cover, test the compression, measure the clutch end play for cw, check the turbo shaft play, pull the plugs and read them. Some of that stuff is invasive and I can imagine sellers being hesitant to let some random guy pull parts on their car.
I'd recommend picking up a book or magazine on what to look for in buying a used car. Consumer Reports has some pretty good stuff. There are quite a few tests they list, if you care. Good luck.

Take the car to Pep Boys and have them do the used car inspection. I forget how much it costs.

a 97 gsx with 45000 miles? good find man...how much is it going for? CW symtoms...mushy clutch, clutch sticking to floor on left turns, loud ticking (usually doens't happen untilt he motor is rendered useless) don't confuse this with lifter tap, there's a difference, trust me...inconsistent clutch engagment is another sign...other than that, look at the car real good. ask the owner questions about it. take it for a test drive to see how it drives. study the interior, look for any rips/tears/holes in the seats and whatnot. checking the spark plugs could be useful information. oil on plugs = not good. usually indicates bad piston rings. ask what kind of oil was used and how often it was changed. you only want to run full synthetic in these things. ask what octane gas was run in it. all in all, good luck with everything...wish i had a gsx with only 45000 miles :(

Changed one piston? That sounds unusuall. The timing belt was a good idea, but I wonder why in the world only one piston would have been changed? It's also unusuall that the clutch is only slipping on 5th gear. It would be worth the money to have this car check by a professional mechanic that knows DSM
