How old are your spark plugs? I'm thinking of getting an autometer sport comp boost gauge, some people have said that autometer stuff isn;t accurate, I have some more research to do on accuracy. Anyone know on how accurate the autometer gauges are?

I've heard good and bad things about them...there are plenty of threads on boost gauges, if you do a search you will find plenty.
Boost controllers...if you look in the FAQ, you can find a link to a comparison of the more popular boost controllers written by John Monnin. His opinions are good IMO, and can be trusted. The main decision you have to make is do you want an $18 mbc that you can set and forget....or do you want an ebc that allows you to tune boost from inside the car while driving that will run you a few hundred bucks. I opted for the mbc for now.
Spark plugs, wires, and a new fuel filter and the full 60 tuneup if you are getting close to it, will allow you to run higher boost safely.
Also you can up the boost, but you wont get as much out of the few extra psi unless you get an intake and downpipe and gut the precats. With these, you will definantly notice the difference.
Lastly, why only 12psi and not 13 or 14?
12psi you can run without a boost controller. The stock 2nd gens run 12psi, and you can do the free boost mod to the 1st gens to get them up to 12psi...so if you aren't going higher...then why get the controller?

I've been looking alot at boost guages...OBX seems to be popular, although not yet totally proven. But I have heard good reviews so far. I just got myself a cheap MBC that I'm going to crank up to 14psi (after testing at 12), get the intake and maybe DP with my CF driveshaft...should make a decent difference. These cars have some real potential.

i have a first gen so stock it was like 8/9psi and i did the free boost mod so its like 9/10psi. but my car has 113K miles and i dont want to blow a gasket or anything. what should I do to tune it up. Timing belt, fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires, what else?

Probably just plugs and check for leaks for now, why are you worried about your gaskets?

The free boost mod puts it up to 2nd gen stock level of 11-12psi, not 9-10. This is covered in the FAQ, as is the 60k tuneup, as well as your other question about 1/4 times and hp. Please take the time to read it.

No I did the free boost mod as well to my first gen and it went to 10 psi then droped off to 7 after 4500 rpm. That boost mod doesn't help that much. I got a profec B Spec II its ok but im holding all 12.5 psi to the redline. So its way faster upstairs. I went to the track today. Ran 13.7 @ 102.89. I expected to do better with my mods, but my 3rd gear is going i need syncros.I have an autometer boost gauge and it is off 1 psi compared to what my boost controller reads. My gauge says 1 more psi than the boost controller. So i don't know. But the new Autometer NEXUS Gauges are sick as hell.

Have you checked for boost leaks? Thats what those numbers make me think, my intake was full of them. The stock Y pipe and BOV suck, both were leaking on mine. Also, bad/absent spark could cause the boost to drop around there, thats also happening on mine... As soon as IPO gets me my new plugs and wires that'll be fixed though.
