96 Camry diagnostic

96 Camry manufactured in USA Jan 1996

Does this car have a diagnostic connector? I took it to Auto Zone and they could not find a connector under the dash. I showed them the diagnostic box under the hood, right side of engine. The Auto Zone employee said this connector was for the on-board computer connection and was no help to them.. Any input is appreciated.

Any 96 car sold in the US should be OBD II compliant and therefore should have the proper OBD II connector under the dash. I would crawl under the dash yourself and take a look.

I did like you said, I got a mirror and light and looked. No connecter. The sticker in the door jam says it was built Jan 1996.

All of this was to find out why my check engine light was on............

I would next try calling Toyota corporate at 800-331-4331 and talk to customer service and ask them first, if the car is OBD II compliant and then if they say yes, where is the OBD II connector under the dash. On our 98 it is to the center side of the steering wheel (more toward the middle of the dash).

I also have a 96 but built earlier, I have 2 connecter ports. I don't know what they both are, One is under the dash left of the wheel kind of half moon shaped with a flip open cap. the other is behind a small flip open junk compartment on the far left corner of the dash,under the power mirror switch. (this compartment must be removed to access the connecter). There are also some important fuses in there also!!

The connector that you are looking for is located behind the small flip down storage tray on the far left below the electric mirror controls. You have to squeeze the sides of this tray and remore or flip in forward to expose the hidden connector.

All 1mz-fe's (3.0L v6) are OBD-II compliant. They were the first production engine to do so.
However... 94-96 1mz-fe's are not fully compliant, as they held over the OBD-I Toyota style connectors. Consisting of DLC1 & DLC2, and DLC3 (for the hand-held Toyota transmission interface.)

You can't plug a 94-96 into an OBD-II computer.


If you want to check a code, open any DLC & bridge E1 & TE1. The CEL will flash the trouble code<s>.

My '96 5S-FE is OBDII with the appropriate connector.
