Does anyone know the max power the stock speakers on a 1998 Taurus GL can handle?
I'm trying to do my stereo install in steps, i was considering the next step as the amp.

Standard car audio speakers are built to take about 10 watts. A true 10 watts is a lot of noise actually. You probably know all this already but when they start to distort you are giving them too much power and the cone will soon tear. You probably often hear a car go by that has totally distorted bass, the cones are damaged from being over driven. The higher rated amplifiers will give you a more clear sound at higher volumes.
Question: Why you need it any louder anyway?

I'm an audiophile and the stock audio is no place close to par with my standards. Let's just say my home theater speaker set up rang in over $3000 for a 7.1 system.
Thanks for your response I'll most likely just run off of the new head unit power until I gather the speakers to put in.

Thanks,

I installed new speakers in my 98 Taurus...they sound GREAT!

PIONEER TS-G6840R CAR SPEAKERS 150 W (2-way 6' x 8') (Ebay)

PIONEER TS-T110 140 W POLY DOME TWEETERS (Ebay)

The rear deck and door panels require the same size.
I recommend the Pioneers, they are inexpensive and sound great.
