FD Reality

Sorry if I am bugging you guys, I'm don't have an RX-7, but I have ridden in one before. Anyways I'm not planning on buying one, but is the matinence that bad? I mean I heard they need rebuilds every 60k or so and that probably isn't cheap huh? Like 3k right out the door. In your opinion, is the car worth the hassle in matinence and reliability. Just a wondering. Thank you for your time and any input you leave.

the engine doesnt need as frequent rebuilds if it is stock. the more you modify it the more care you need to keep if from popping. If anything try to get one as a weekend car, and some stupid car like lumina or corolla as a daily.

its the best car ive ever driven. nothing can duplicate the expierience of driving a rear wheel car with 2 turbos. expensive, but worth every penny. also, the motors ca last 100k or so if u dont go crazy with it. but i like to juice it up alot.

I see I heard about this list of mods that if you do will almost make the rotary engine practically bullet proof. Is this true? Anways how much does a rebuild cost...a good one like by Tripoint racing..I heard they were an alright company but that is just second hand. Thanks for the input. I would probably drive the car every day, but only like a mile or two a day give or take, and on weekends I don't plan on going too far so figure just about 10,000 a year. Would you figure that would last a while. I am actually now thinking about getting an FD cause I sold my GSX and 3000GT. I want something quick and manuverable. Would the FD fill my needs. My other choices are a 3000GT VR4, Camaro SS LS1, or Trans Am WS6 LS1 or a NA supra cause my cousin is selling one sorta cheap...well cheaper than normal. Anways thanks for the input.

Wait a sec I'm thinking about spending 14k tops...is that enough, or would it end up being like 20k to make it run...well assuming it is good condition. Is getting one done with a recent rebuild typically a good thing, you know like 115k but just rebuilt or like 62k original...or is that just a stupid question..anyways sorry for like double posting or whatever. It was just bugging me

the ones with rebuilt engines usually are gonna need new turbos, which will run about 3200.

do you think it is possible to build a bullet proof rotary? If so how much, or would it be chaper in the long run to swap in a piston engine...reliability wise would it pay off in the long run? Thanks for the info

no pistons!!!!!!!!!unless u want to ruin the 50/50 weight ratio and spend a bunch for nothing. an rx is what it is, u can get a race motor that is almost bulletproof, but nothing is ever perfect. my friend has $100k no lie into his fd, and he still blows motors. he also has 450 whp and could smoke vipers. id say bout 20k to get one in great condition. thats what mine came to with new motor, turbos, radiator, clutch kit, blow off valve, efini y-pipe, new brakes, etc.............of course u could spend 15k on one in good running condition with about 65,000 miles and be ok for a while if ur lucky. just keep a hefty reserve fund just in case. unless u like to walk!

14k will get you a nice FD. I would get that or the trans am.

No such thing as a bulletproof engine. You can build one with high tolerances.

weight balance is not a valid argument since its false v8 are heavier (well,aluminium v8 blocks are about the same weight)

but you're gonna be hated for doing such swap in a FD

I know, I wouldn't want to switich to pistons, but if it is that bad. Well I understand where you guys are coming from. I didn't mean like bullet proof as in indestructablie I just meant like more reliable. I'm not trying to get a reliable car here, I already have one icase something happens. I just want one where I can spend more time in the driverseat the under the hood, yanno what I mean? Is a 5k extra fund enough to keep around jsut in case, our would a rebuild on turbos and the engine or whatever cost more. I had another thing I wanted to say but it's late and I can't remember so maybe I'll ask tomorrow if I remember. Anyways thanks for all the input, you guys ahve really helped. I think I am leaning towards the FD, just need a push in the right direction.

fd is the sickest car u will ever drive. 5k is a good reserve fund, and u never know, u could have no problems. a sick engine would run u bout 3500 all juiced up(atkins rotary)and turbos can vary from 500 to 3500. stock hp is still rediculous in those cars, u dont really have to modify it much.

14k for the car and 5k for reserve funds.

Anyways Thank you very much for your help. I was about to do an LS1 conversion too, but I guess since you guys said it is possible for a rotary to be reliable, I might just go that direction... I'll keep you guys posted on what happens. thanks.
