wiring fog lights

I got a set of piaa fog lights with a harness and switch. Can I just wire the power to the headlights so the fogs come on with the headlights instead of having a seperate switch

I wouldn't reccomend it. Run the wire right up to the fuse box in the engine bay. Just feed it behind the bumper and upthrough the washer fluid resevoir hole in the fender and connect it to somthing in there. Then run the toggle switch through the fire wall and mount where ever.

Why wouldn't you recomend it? The car I had before my cavy I had fog lights professonally installed and they wired them directly into my headlights and I had no problems.

For the average joe mechanic who probably dosn't know which wire to tap into, i wouldn't reccomend it. It also depends on the wattage the new fogs are going to have. If you put too much draw on a certain wire you can constantly blow fuses, head light bulbs, etc. Also there is a possibility of messing with your DRL's and causing you to also loose your high's or lows. Personally, i wouldn't do it myself, perfessionally i'd let them tap into my headlights somewhere.

I'm with CRJ on this one. Personally, I wouldn't tap into the factory headlight system when installing aftermarket fog lights. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying I wouldn't. :wink: :p

After thinking about it I agree that taping into the headlights for power could overload the wiring and fuses. What about using a relay and taking power directly from the battery

Not wiring into headlights is a wise decision imo. Bein an electrontech for many years should qualify me to offer such info.
Doing so can cause all sorts of electrical bumps and grinds in both the electrical system, and the processing configuration of related. depending on the extra load, it could seriously slow cook the actuation assy.
Consider it this way. A mistake could compromise any or all parts of a well dedicated lighting and safety system. Therefore, if you dedicate the fog assy to it's own wiring config, it should, (could ) operate independently should the mains fail; thus act as a secondary dedicated back-up lighting system.
I'd fuse it twice, relay it, and check it thrice.
Don't be left in the dark on this one.
