backfiring issue

i have a 350 v8 with an edelbrock 4 barrel on top of it. i have noticed a lot of backfiring thru the carb at higher throttle/rpm. i checked the timing and tuned the carb just right and it still does it. for kicks and giggles, i unplugged my number one spark plug because it wasnt firing well with the timing light and it didnt backfire at all even at full throttle except for a little exhaust popping due to the fact that one cylinder was just pumping unused gas into the exhaust. does this probably mean that i have something wrong with the valvetrain on my number one cylinder? i noticed that when i had a really lean jetting, it would also prevent backfiring even when the #1 plug was hooked up.
another wierd thing is that as the air temperature gets hotter, like right about now as it is spring, it backfires a considerable amount less than when its cold outside. this is confusing the crud out of me and i don't know what to make of it. some people say i need a valve job and some others say that my cam might be flat or the timing chain jumped a tooth on one of the gears. :banghead:
is it possible that all of this problem could be caused just by the fact that i have an open air filter? (ya know, the edelbrock chrome kind with the filter exposed) like maybe the fact that i dont have the stock intake tubing with the hot air intake from the right header. maybe the air is too cold going in there and when its hot out its warm enough from just being warm outside to not backfire? all i know is that ive tried about every timing setting and main jet size/power valve with no real improvement. :banghead:

You may be on to something with your air filter. Cold air is more dense than warm air. Therefore the colder the air the more oxygen there is so it makes it easier to fire. So you may be running a bit lean. Also I would check your valve adjustment for your #1 cyl.

yeah maybe ill just get a valve job and the performance cam ive been wanting to get anyways. that might do the trick lol i dunno
